Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland scored while Thomas Delaney impressed as Borussia Dortmund beat SC Paderborn 3-2 in the DFB-Pokal.
Borussia Dortmund were off the block quickly, as Emre Can opened the scoring just six minutes in with a left-footed strike from inside the box. Ten minutes later, the hosts were two goals to the good with Jadon Sancho finding the back of the net after being set up by Erling Haaland. Having gone into half-time with their lead intact, Dortmund found it difficult to add to the scoreline after the restart.
Paderborn fought their way back into the game as Julian Justvan pulled one goal back in the 79th minute. Haaland thought he had won it for his team in stoppage time only for his goal to be cancelled out with the referee awarding Paderborn a penalty for a foul prior to the goal at the other end. Prince Osei Osuwu stepped up and made no mistake, forcing the tie into extra-time.
However, five minutes into the first half of the added time, Haaland found the back of the net again and Dortmund held on to their narrow lead to progress to the next round. Here’s how we rated the performances of Edin Terzic’s men on Tuesday night.
Marwin Hitz: 6/10
Made a few good saves but needed to do better to try and stop Justvan’s strike which was straight at him, although it did not help that he did not get a clear sight because of the bodies in front of him.
Lukasz Piszczek: 5.5/10
Getting a rare starting opportunity as the right-sided centre-back, it showed that the veteran had not been playing regularly as he looked a tad bit scratchy at times. Seemed to slow down and tire out as the game wore on, but lasted the entire 120 minutes.
Emre Can: 7/10

Starting at the heart of the three-man defensive unit, the German international provided an aggressive presence at the back and was assured in his duties for the most part, making two interceptions, one tackle and winning six aerial duels. His most valuable contribution came at the other end, though, as he handed Dortmund an early lead with a fine finish.
Manuel Akanji: 6.5/10
Solid and reliable, Akanji kept things tight on the left side of the defence, as he won two ground duels and four aerial duels. Had a chance to score, but his effort was cleared off the line.
Mateu Morey: 5/10
Getting another start in the absence of Thomas Meunier, the Spaniard struggled to make the same kind of impact as the Belgian going forward. Defensively, Morey had his hands full against Christopher Antwi-Adjei and was not always able to cope with him effectively.
Jude Bellingham: 6/10
Not one of his best performances, but the young Englishman showed glimpses of his ability going forward as he made one key pass and completed one dribble while also putting in decent efforts off the ball as well.
Thomas Delaney: 8/10

After an impressive performance against FC Augsburg, the Dane built on it here, enjoying an impactful outing against the second division outfit. Got the assist for Can’s opening goal before setting up Haaland for the winner in the extra-time. Completed three key passes on the night and posted a passing accuracy of 94% while also making three tackles and two interceptions. A strong, all-round display.
Nico Schulz: 4.5/10
Coming in for Raphael Guerreiro at left wing-back, the German got into promising positions, but lacked the quality on his end product to make it count. Squandered a great chance in the first period and was guilty of allowing too much space on his flank leading up to Paderborn’s first goal.
Jadon Sancho: 7/10
Four goals and four assists in 2021.

Caused Paderborn all sorts of problems each time he was on the ball and doubled Borussia Dortmund’s lead in the 16th minute with a well-struck goal. Made three key passes, created one big chance, completed three dribbles and hit three accurate crosses and could have had another goal. Seemed to tire out as the game went on.
Erling Haaland: 7/10
A lively display from the Norwegian international, who set Sancho up for Dortmund’s second goal of the night before scoring the winning goal in the extra time. Was a menace at the top as he pressed the visitors high up the pitch and make things happen. Ended the game with four key passes and two big chances created.

Julian Brandt: 5/10
The least effective of the Borussia Dortmund attackers, Brandt was able to involve himself a great deal in dangerous moments, although he was involved in the lead-up to the second goal. Failed to complete a single dribble or a key pass before making way for Gio Reyna in the second half.
SUBSTITUTES
Felix Passlack: 4/10
On for Morey at half-time, Passlack gave away the penalty which Osei Osuwu converted to equalise and send the game into extra-time. Did not do a whole lot going forward.
Giovanni Reyna: 5/10
Replaced Brandt in the 65th minute and much like the man he replaced, the USMNT starlet was not able to get involved a great deal in the attacking third.
Mahmoud Dahoud: 5/10
On for Bellingham in the 74th minute. Made a couple of good forward passes but wasn’t able to make a major impact.
Raphael Guerreiro: N/A
Came on for Schulz in the 90th minute. Could have made it 4-2, but missed.
Marco Reus: N/A
Late substitute for Sancho in extra-time.
