Transfer News: Real Madrid face Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham competition for Florian Neuhaus

Real Madrid will have a battle on their hands to sign German midfielder Florian Neuhaus, with Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham also entering the race.

According to a report from German publication Sport1, Real Madrid are set to face competition from Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus.

The 23-year-old German has been with Gladbach since 2017, having arrived from 1860 Munich. After a season away on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf, Neuhaus has gradually grown into being an integral member of the team at Borussia Park, in the process establishing himself as one of the most reliable young central midfielders in Bundesliga.

Neuhaus has been enjoying a fine season in 2020/21, having bagged five goals and six assists from 25 games in all competitions. His exploits in Germany have not gone unnoticed, with Real Madrid keen on signing the Gladbach star and understandably so, as Los Blancos midfield unit is in need of an injection of fresh blood.

Luka Modric may once again be shining bright on the field, but at 35, there is no denying that he is in the final phase of his career. Furthermore, Toni Kroos is also into his thirties, while Federico Valverde has regressed a bit after a spectacular 2019/20 campaign. So, bringing in someone like Neuhaus, who can be a long-term replacement for Modric, would be a smart move.

However, they will have to face competition from Borussia Dortmund, who have been keeping tabs on Neuhaus for quite some time now and are plotting a summer move. Die Schwarzgelben have the likes of Thomas Delaney, Emre Can, Jude Bellingham, Axel Witsel an Mahmoud Dahoud as options in the middle of the park.

But, the report states that they are intent on adding another central midfielder who can make vital contributions in attack and in defence, with Neuhaus emerging as a viable candidate. Considering that Witsel is 32 and will be entering the final year of his contract at the end of the season, a move for a new midfielder makes sense for Dortmund.

In addition to Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham are also said to keen on signing Neuhaus. Jose Mourinho bolstered his midfield options last summer with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg but is in need of a quality partner for the Dane.

Moussa Sissoko offers industry, but lacks quality on the ball and is on the wrong side of the thirties. Harry Winks, meanwhile, has not been able to establish himself as a regular under Mourinho, thus warranting the need of a new central midfielder like Neuhaus.

As per the report, the three-time capped German international has a release clause worth €40 million, which could prove to be a problem for Borussia Dortmund, more so if they miss out on Champions League football, as they currently sit seventh.

Dortmund are intent on replacing interim manager Eden Terzic with current Gladbach boss Marco Rose. This could end up playing to their advantage, considering that Neuhaus has flourished under the Austrian. Should Rose make the move to Signal Iduna Park, it could come as a blow for Real Madrid and Tottenham.

Neuhaus is contracted with Die Fohlen till 2024 and is said to be in no hurry to take a call on his future. It remains to be seen if any of the aforementioned clubs make a move for him this summer.
