Liverpool and Tottenham are reportedly among a host of Premier League clubs closely watching Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
The Mirror have reported of increasing interest in Kalvin Phillips. The Leeds United star had already been drawing attention from Premier League clubs in the summer and it seems the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham are keeping a close eye on the midfielder’s form and performances in his first season in the top-flight.
Kalvin Phillips is a name that has really come to the fore in the last year and a half. The midfielder signed a new long-term contract at the start of the 2019/20 season, committing his future to Leeds United amid rumours linking him to a move to the Premier League.
However, Leeds managed to get their long-deserved promotion under Marcelo Bielsa and Phillips has carried over his Championship form to the Premier League. The summer transfer window opened and closed and despite transfer speculation, the 24-year-old stayed up at Leeds.
His performances have even earned him the senior cap for England, which has reignited the interest in his services. Valued by Leeds at around £50 million as per the reports, Liverpool and Tottenham are among clubs that have shown a keen interest in the 24-year-old.
Liverpool brought in Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich to beef up the midfield stations, with Curtis Jones joining the senior ranks after his promotion from the reserves. However, the gruesome schedule thanks to the ongoing pandemic means that the Reds are still short of depth in the said position, especially with Jurgen Klopp fielding 3 midfielders in a 4-3-3 setup.
The injuries to Thiago and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn’t helped and we could very well see Liverpool delve into the January transfer window. Phillips has the tenacity and talent to go straight into the setup at Anfield but the £50 million tag could be a tad bit too much.
As for Tottenham, Jose Mourinho has signed a fair number of players to strengthen the squad, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg being the pick of the lot for midfield along with signing Giovani Lo Celso on a permanent basis. Still, Mourinho would love a player like Phillips who leaves everything on the field.
Daniel Levy will be encouraged by the improvement in Spurs’ displays and might sanction another costly signing in the hopes of finally putting an end to the trophy drought. Leeds will unlikely budge from the £50 million tag as they regard Phillips a prominent member of the Bielsa’ed Leeds.
