Transfer News: Arsenal captain Aubameyang reportedly open to joining Spanish champions Barcelona

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang is reportedly keen on leaving current club Arsenal for Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

According to a report published by SPORT, Aubameyang is willing to switch clubs come this summer as Barcelona plots a move for the 30 year old striker, amid news of him staying at the North London club.

The Gabonese international has been the centre of a lot of attention recently, with him being linked strongly to Barcelona and Inter Milan. The Arsenal captain is on the last a year and half of his contract, and now would be the right time for Arsenal to cash in on him, specially since everything right now suggests that Mikel Arteta’s men will likely miss out on European football.

Aubameyang moved to England as part of an indirect three way swap between Arsenal, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund got Batshuayi and Chelsea got Giroud as part of this deal. In only his 2nd full season at the club, the African striker has been made club captain.

During his time in the English capital, Aubameyeng has managed to net 49 goals in 74 appearances, firing himself to a golden boot last season. He was also the second highest scorer of the Europa League in 2018/19 as Arsenal lost out to Chelsea in the final.  He’s also been on a hot streak this campaign, registering 17 goals in the Premier League, second only to Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

The man in question is ready to push for a move to Barca, with Quique Stein and co. looking to lure him in with the prospect of playing Champions League. The Blaugrana have been in the market for a striker for as long as one can remember, looking for Luis Suarez’s replacements.

Aubameyang is undoubtedly world class, but at this age only gives any place he moves to a short term solution. However, given his quality and the price he’ll go for due to his contract, Barcelona should look to get his signature before any other club does, and then go again in the summer for a different striker.
