French club Rennes have reportedly placed a £51 million price tag on youngster Eduardo Camavinga, who is being tailed by Barcelona and Manchester United.
According to Daily Mail, Manchester United and Barcelona have been told to cough up £51 million if they are serious in their pursuit of Eduardo Camavinga. Rennes have placed the hefty price tag on the young midfielder, who has become the talk of Europe with the interest that he has been able to garner in his services.
Daily Mail have credited L’Equipe for the price tag, stating that the French publication have broken the news of Rennes raising the asking price on Camavinga to £51 million.
Europe is truly observing the rise of Eduardo Camavinga. The youngster broke into the first-team setup at Rennes in the 2018-19 season. But, the ensuing campaign is where the 17-year-old has established himself, not only as a regular but one of the first names on the team sheet whenever available and fit.
So far this season, Camavinga has accrued 16 appearances against his name, with an assist to show for his efforts. But, the youngster’s skillset lies more in the defensive aspect of the game, acting more as an Anchor Man in midfield and the connector between the defence and offence. Barcelona and Manchester United are rightly interested in the midfielder.
Midfield is a pressing concern for Manchester United, especially the holding midfield area. Nemanja Matic has petered off and is likely to leave the club in the summer, if not in January. Scott McTominay has earned a regular spot in midfield, but considering his exploits as more of a box-to-box midfielder, there is a case to be made to partner him with a defensive-minded player.
Paul Pogba hasn’t returned from his injury layoff and is rumoured to be considering a switch away from the club. Fred has come good of late, but is still not an ideal option to start games week-in week-out alongside McTominay in midfield. Bringing in a defensive midfielder and a number 10 would be high on United’s priority list, thus justifying their pursuit of Camavinga.
Barcelona’s interest is a bit puzzling, to say the least. The Catalans have brought in Frenkie de Jong and Arthur to bolster their midfield in recent times, with Carles Alena being considered more and more as a regular as time passes by. Frenkie de Jong is considered to be Sergio Busquets’s replacement in the long run. But, the Dutch international has shown he is more of use when played a bit further up the pitch.

Thus, the interest from Barcelona might stem from the need to replace Busquets in the purest form, by bringing in a like-minded player; one who is focused more on defence and distribution rather than being more involved in the attacking side of the things.
Rennes are well aware they cannot hold Camavinga for long, considering the stature of clubs the youngster has been linked with. But, the French club is looking to cash in on the midfielder with a hefty £51 million asking price, one they are hoping one of Barcelona and Manchester United or perhaps someone else ends up paying.
The price tag is justifiable from the fact that Camavinga has a contract with Rennes that runs till 2022, which means that the French club has free reign to place whatever price they want to. It will now be up to Barcelona, Manchester United or another suitor to come swooping in with an offer that will be too good to refuse for Rennes.
