Manchester United have reportedly offered Serie A heavyweights AS Roma a chance to sign Chilean superstar Alexis Sanchez.
As per a report from Italian publication RomaPress, Manchester United seem keen on offloading star attacker Alexis Sanchez before the European transfer window slams shut. The Red Devils have offered the Chilean forward to Serie A giants AS Roma.
Alexis Sanchez arrived from Arsenal in January last year amid huge expectations. But, it would be fair to say that his transfer to Manchester United has proven to be a major dud. Till date, the 30-year-old has made 45 appearances for the 20-time English champions, producing a meagre return of just 5 goals and 9 assists.
Sanchez has struggled for form and fitness during his time at Manchester United, but showed his prowess during the summer’s 2019 Copa America in Brazil, where he shone for the Chilean national team. However, his future at United remains a subject of speculation with the latest report from RomaPress claiming that the forward has been offered to AS Roma.
The report further adds that while Roma are not ruling out a move for the 30-year-old at the moment, they are apprehensive about the financial commitments that would be required to pull off such a deal. Sanchez is on net wages of almost €20 million per season at Manchester United, whereas the Giallorossi’s highest-earner, Edin Dzeko, packets €4.5 million per year minus bonuses.
However, as per the report, Manchester United are willing to pay a large portion of the Chilean’s wages, which would make it slightly easier for Roma to sign him.
Manchester United have lost a forward already this summer, with Romelu Lukaku joining Roma’s rivals Inter Milan on the English transfer deadline day. And considering that they have not signed a replacement for the Belgian, losing Sanchez as well might not be the most ideal move from the club’s point of view, given that he can provide an additional option as a centre-forward.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did hint that the Chilean is a part of his plans during his pre-match press conference ahead of the Red Devils’ season-opener against Chelsea. “Alexis has come in and trained well,” the Norwegian said (h/t Metro).
“He’s four or five weeks behind the boys and has not played apart from the one behind closed doors here, so I think he’ll see this as an opportunity as well to make his mark. ‘I do expect him to stay, there’s a striker there we think is going to be able to score some goals.”
The report from RomaPress states that a source from the Serie A giants have confirmed that Sanchez has been offered to the club. However, his wages might prove to be a problem for the Giallorossi. Moreover, considering Solskjaer’s latest statements, it does seem like the Chilean might end up staying at Manchester United.
