Real Madrid are reportedly considering the prospect of signing Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron, after his impressive performances in the 2019 Copa America.
According to reports from Paraguayan outlet TyC Sports, Premier League playmaker Miguel Almiron, who plays for Newcastle United, has registered himself on the radar of European heavyweights Real Madrid on the back of his eye-catching displays in the Copa America for Paraguay.
Almiron, 25, started out at Cerro Porteno in his homeland, before moving to Uruguayan side Lanus in 2015 where he grew into prominence. Eighteen months later in January 2017, the attacking midfielder moved to MLS outfit Atlanta United, where he established himself as one of the best players in the competition.
After spending two years in the MLS, Almiron was snapped up by Premier League outfit Newcastle United, in a club record deal worth £21 million. The Paraguayan international made 10 appearances in the second half of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign, but did not score or assist a single goal.
While his debut season in England wasn’t all too impressive, Almiron did show fleeting glimpses of his abilities and has now made Real Madrid take notice of him after his fine performances in the 2019 Copa America for Paraguay.
The 25-year-old was La Albirroja’s best performer as they held Argentina to a 1-1 draw earlier this week and has generally been the one to watch out for, having created six goal-scoring chances in two games till date. And, this has led to Real Madrid taking an interest in him.
Real Madrid have made a whirlwind start to the summer transfer window, having already completed five signings, with Eder Militao, Rodrygo, Luka Jovic, Eden Hazard and Ferland Mendy all moving to the Santiago Bernabeu. The spending has exceeded £300 million, but Los Blancos seem far from done with their transfer business.
Real Madrid are hoping to sign Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba in the coming weeks as they look to bolster their midfield department that underperformed last season. A number of the midfielders currently on the books are expected to be offloaded, with Marcos Llorente already joining Atletico Madrid, while Isco and Dani Ceballos are also likely to be shown the doors.
This would open up a room for another creative midfielder to join Real Madrid in the summer, which could be the reason behind the interest in Almiron. However, the 25-year-old hasn’t really proven him at the topmost level on a consistent basis as of yet, so the report should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Almiron is contracted with Newcastle United till the summer of 2024 and despite the reported interest from Real Madrid, he is very much likely to stay put in the Premier League come next season.
