Manchester United and Leicester City have reportedly tabled €40 million bids to AS Monaco in order to land Belgian international Youri Tielemans.
According to Belgian publication DH, Youri Tielemans is unlikely to be an AS Monaco player beyond the summer transfer window. The likes of Manchester United and Leicester City are vying to sign the Belgian international and have reportedly submitted respective offers of €40 million in order to land the central midfielder.
According to other reports, Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Youri Tielemans. And if the report from DH is to be believed, United are ready to grab the chance. The report details Tielemans as a replacement for Paul Pogba, which makes sense, given the fact that the French international has openly admitted to wanting a move away from the club.
Leicester’s bid also makes sense. Tielemans arrived at Leicester in January, 2019 on a loan for the remainder of the season. In just half a season, the AS Monaco midfielder came up with a return of 3 goals and 5 assists in 13 Premier League appearances, which is impressive, given he did not have much time to adjust to a new league.
Youri Tielemans was hyped up as one of the best up-and-coming talents during his time at Anderlecht. But, the midfielder has been rather quiet since his move to AS Monaco. The Leicester loan stint though, has seen suitors return for the 22-year-old, with Manchester United, Tottenham and the Foxes interested in the Belgian international.
Manchester United have bigger problems to deal with as far as midfield is concerned, apart from Paul Pogba’s public admission of wanting a new challenge.
Ander Herrera has left the club while Nemanja Matic was far from consistent in the 2018-19 campaign, which leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with three potential arrivals in the area, if Pogba ends up leaving as well, unless the manager opts to start one or more of the academy graduates.
Leicester City have seen how dangerous Youri Tielemans can be while operating in central midfield. But, with James Maddison among players linked with a move away from King Power, not bringing back the Belgian international will reduce the creativity within the squad by a good extent.
Tottenham have likely prioritised other options, which leaves Manchester United and Leicester City to battle it out. As per DH, the two teams have lodged offers of €40 million for Tielemans, who will have to choose between the two if AS Monaco accept.
The 22-year-old, on one hand, has already established himself under Brendan Rodgers at Leicester and could slot straight back in if he signs for them. But, Tielemans could also be tempted by the prospect of being a central figure in the rebuild at Manchester United, who also have European football on offer for the midfielder.
The ball is now in AS Monaco’s court, who have to decide if they want to accept the offers or stall for a higher amount. Tielemans though, is almost certainly heading to the Premier League this summer, albeit this time on a permanent transfer.
