Manchester United are reportedly ready to challenge the other European giants that are pursuing the signature of SL Benfica star Ruben Dias.
Ruben Dias has become a wanted man in Europe. The likes of Atletico Madrid and Juventus are in pursuit of the SL Benfica star. But, according to the report from TransferMarketWeb, the two European giants are set to face competition from Premier League heavyweights Manchester United.
The report adds that Benfica have slapped a €60 million price tag on the 21-year-old, whose stock has risen exponentially over the last year or so. Ruben Dias has been a part of Benfica since 2008 and has been through his paces at the Portuguese club itself, before making his breakthrough in the first-team in 2017.
2018 was an eventful year for young Dias as he became a key player at Benfica and received his first senior cap for Portugal. Now an established member at club level and internationally, Dias could be set for the next step in his fledgling career – a move to a big club, with Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United interested.
The Red Devils have enough options at their disposal at centre-back. But, only Victor Lindelof has managed to impress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so far, with his consistent displays likely to have earned him a permanent slot in the back four. But, the other spot is up for grabs, with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo all potentially on the chopping block.
Ruben Dias could fit the bill at Manchester United. Technically adept and right-footed, the 21-year-old could strike a great partnership with Victor Lindelof, who was also brought to England from Benfica by United. The only stumbling block could be the €60 million fee that Benfica are set to ask.
That the player is managed by Gestifute, Jorge Mendes’ agency; an agency Jose Mourinho is a client of, could play spoilsport as well, although there were reports when Mourinho was sacked that Jorge Mendes does not hold any grudges with Manchester United over the matter.
The 21-year-old is a typical modern centre-back and has proven his fitness as well, having played 45 matches so far this season. While Manchester United are also looking at other prime targets like Harry Maguire and Samuel Umtiti, the Red Devils could at least explore the prospect in the summer, as will the likes of Atletico Madrid, Juventus and other potential suitors.
