Manchester United have reportedly joined a host of top clubs vying to sign Schalke superstar Leon Goretzka, whose deal is set to expire at the end of the season
According to Daily Mail, Leon Goretzka seems to have earned another admirer in Manchester United. The Red Devils have joined a list of high-profile clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid and others, who are all looking to take advantage of the Schalke playmaker’s contract situation.
Schalke’s desperation to retain Goretzka beyond the summer of 2018 is quite evident from reports of the club being ready to make the player the highest-paid in the club’s history. However, interest from so many top-tier clubs might make their negotiations even tougher.
Leon Goretzka is one of the brighter gems of Germany’s latest iteration of their golden generation. At just 22, Goretzka has amassed 129 senior appearances for Schalke, with a modest record of 19 goals and 13 assists. However, his start to the 2017-18 campaign hints at an improvement in contributions, with 4 goals in 10 Bundesliga matches thus far.
Goals and assists aside, Goretzka’s dominance in the midfield along with his movement and vision is a delight to watch. The 22-year-old seems like the German answer to Luka Modric in more ways than one. And just like Modric, the Schalke man seems to be in demand in European football.

The likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool and many more are interested in Goretzka, with one of the many reasons being his unwillingness to commit to a new deal at Schalke, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.
And his contract situation is a boost to the suitors, who feel his current stance hints at his wish to switch allegiances. Manchester United, too, seem to have joined the chase. United have always been linked to Modric and the need for a creative addition is paramount, with Michael Carrick and Juan Mata both in their last six months of their contracts.
Also, Mourinho has reportedly asked scouts to find him a magician come January – a search that could lead them back to Goretzka if the scouts fail to find a suitable target. Already a member of the German National Team, the 22-year-old is widely seen as the next potential world-class superstar of German football.
His decision to not renew his contract might just be a masterstroke as well.
The contract ends in the summer and with the World Cup around the corner, if the 22-year-old manages to wow the audience again with his performances in a top-tier international event – like his display in the Confederations Cup – he could have his pick among the crowd of suitors, not that he doesn’t have the same at the present moment itself.
