According to a report by The Mirror, Sergio Romero has signed a new four-year deal with Manchester United. Manchester United were yet again rumoured to lose first-choice keeper David De Gea this summer to Real Madrid but nothing has been confirmed yet.
However, with Romero signing a deal, it could possibly raise some questions about the Spaniard’s future at the club.
The 30-year-old left Italian side Sampdoria for United in 2015 under a move administered by the then manager of United, Louis van Gaal. The Argentina international was mainly signed as a last-minute replacement for De Gea since he appeared set to leave for Real Madrid that summer, but the move never materialised.
Thus, Romero was primarily utilized as De Gea’s understudy for a long time. It was in the Europa League games last season that Mourinho started deploying Romero ahead of De Gea and that did pay off. Romero has truly cemented a position for himself and was splendid in the Europa League final against Ajax.
In fact, Romero has truly proven to be capable of lot more than just being a deputy for De Gea. Its unsure if he is confident enough to start regularly in the Premier League over the Real Madrid target but he can get there soon simply due to his impressive performances.
Romero makes stops based on pure instinct, and not many goalkeepers can boast of getting their instincts right at almost all times. He also remains alert throughout the match and can maintain a sense of consistency. It will be interesting to see if Mourinho starts deploying him more in Premier League matches.
He has become a player Mourinho can rely on. For a team like United, who have been heavily dependent on David De Gea for a long time, it can be difficult to trust another player to do a good job in his stead. However, Romero has not let them down in any regard but it remains to be seen how he will fare playing in regular league games.
