Manchester United have been reportedly advised by Jose Mourinho to launch a move for Harry Kane instead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to a report by The Mirror, Jose Mourinho wants his bosses at Manchester United to utilize their £100 million from the transfer kitty to purchase Harry Kane over Cristiano Ronaldo. The Red Devils boss is understood to have made it clear that he is not interested in the prospect of Ronaldo’s Old Trafford return.
The 32-year-old Real Madrid recently made headlines abuzz about a possible return to Manchester United after reports of the player looking to exit the club after being hit by an accusation of tax evasion by Spanish authorities.
United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was even considering signing off a £100 million-plus deal to lure the Portuguese superstar back to his old club but it seems like Jose Mourinho will have none of it. The manager believes that signing Kane along with long-time target Alvaro Morata will prove to be a better option.
While this might dash the hopes of all United fans hoping for an emphatic Ronaldo return to Old Trafford, the truth is that Ronaldo alone might not be able to lift the burden of improving the Red Devils’ blunt attack force. Last season, we saw a similar figure in Zlatan Ibrahimovic but things went haywire once he got injured.
Arguably, Ronaldo could work with players like Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford to create a better front-line but the Portuguese striker himself has managed to return to his blistering form due to Zinedine Zidane’s strategy of letting him take adequate rest and utilizing him only in big matches.
With a team like Real Madrid, one can afford to let a player like Ronaldo rest. However, United’s performances were too defensive last season and after having sealed a Champions League berth, Mourinho needs to focus on bringing strength into the attack and signing only Ronaldo is likely to make things tough for both the club and the player.
A strike-force of Harry Kane and Alvaro Morata instead, would enhance the Red Devils’ Premier League title and Champions League ambitions more than Ronaldo’s solo, albeit much-awaited arrival.
In fact, Harry Kane seems like the ideal prospect for United’s frontline. For the second successive season, Kane finished up with the Premier League’s Golden Boot and has been in brilliant form for Pochettino’s club. However, a move for the 23-year-old can prove to be problematic for United.
The striker only signed a new contract back in December, which is supposed to keep him at Spurs until 2022, and the club could therefore demand a gigantic sum of money which might even cross the already-steep £100 million mark.
Based on United’s performances though, Mourinho is clear about what needs to be done and the club will need to figure out the financial aspect of things as well before making a decision going forward.
