Liverpool are set to bring Mohamed Salah back to the Premier League after having a huge bid accepted for the winger by AS Roma.
According to Transfermarketweb, the former Chelsea speedster is set to a move to Anfield in the coming weeks after Liverpool and Roma finally came to an agreement over a transfer fee. The Reds will reportedly part with a massive €45 million in exchange for the 25-year-old winger.
Salah was said to have agreed personal terms with Liverpool earlier this month, even before making an official bid for the Egyptian international. They subsequently had an bid of around £34 million rejected, but their new offer seems to have done the trick.
The former FC Basel winger is coming off the best season of his senior career, having scored 19 goals and registered 15 assists in 41 games for the Giallorossi. He was arguably Luciano’s Spalletti’s best players and finished as the club’s second top goal scorer of the previous campaign.
Liverpool incidentally lost Salah to Chelsea, who paid an estimated £11 million for him in the winter transfer window of the 2013/14 season. Barring a few flashes of brilliance, the Blues were never able to get the best out of him and he failed to hold down a spot in Mourinho’s starting XI.
The following season, after making only 8 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, he was loaned out to Fiorentina for a period of 18 months in January 2015, with Juan Cuadrado going the other way. However, despite scoring 9 goals and getting 4 assists in 26 appearances, he cut his loan short at the end of the season.
He moved to arch rivals AS Roma on loan, where he immediately became an integral part of the first team. In 42 appearances he scored 15 goals and racked up 9 assists, which convinced the Italian giants to part with around €15 million make his loan deal a permanent one.
Since departing Stamford Bridge, he has grown leaps and bounds as a player and his the consistent increase in productivity over the past 3 seasons is proof of his steady progression. Capable of playing anywhere in attack, his versatility that Jurgen Klopp can certainly put to good use.
However, it is his pace that is his biggest asset. Salah is one of the fastest players in the world, combine that with his eye for goal, ability to pick out a pass and his tireless work ethic, the Reds have a superb player on their hands and one who is far better than he was when he left London 2 years ago.
The Egyptian has all the qualities that Klopp needs in a winger and at only 25, he is just entering his prime. It will also be interesting to see how he incorporates both Saido Mane and Salah, both of whom are predominantly right wingers into his squad. Further reinforcements are still needed at the club, but Salah’s acquisition is a fine way for Jurgen Klopp to kickstart the transfer window.
