Liverpool are reportedly close to sealing a £12 million move for Leicester City youngster Demarai Gray when the transfer window comes around in July.
The Reds have already begun to contact a number of targets to get their transfer business up and running as quick as possible. And according to the Mirror, Jurgen Klopp may acquire his first signing of the summer in Leicester City’s Demarai Gray.
The 20-year-old, who’s complained of a lack of first-team opportunities with the Foxes, has reportedly had his head turned by the interest shown from Liverpool, Arsenal and even Tottenham.
Leicester City, who’ve endured a poor season following the meteoric heights of Premier League glory last term, have inserted a £12 million release clause in his contract. Should Liverpool cough up that amount, the Foxes will incur a £8.5 million profit just 18 months after he was signed from Birmingham City for a fee of £3.5 million.
Liverpool have been linked with a number of targets this summer as they look to increase their squad depth ahead of potential Champions League football next term.
The Reds have suffered from a lack of depth even in the current campaign when they had no continental commitments as regular injuries to key players left Klopp with very little to choose from the bench.
It’s hence no surprise that Liverpool have been linked with names of the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Kylian Mbappe, Marco Asensio etc.
Although Gray has suffered from a lack of first-team opportunities, he’s certainly shown flashes of his brilliance that has managed to attract the attention of the Premier League elite.
A thumping strike from distance against Manchester United during a 4-1 loss earlier this season will remain long in the youngster’s memory and will be a telling reminder to interested suitors of what they could come to expect of the player.
Having made 42 appearances this season, many of which have come off the bench, Gray has scored 3 goals and assisted 6 others. Liverpool struggled without a player of Sadio Mane’s penetrability, trickery and speed and while Gray is some way from matching up to the Senegalese, he has definitely showcased early signs that he can get there in the future.
The Foxes’ winger may showcase immense promise and talent but there is no doubt that the player remains a futuristic investment in Klopp’s mind as the German has been urged to make a big money signing in attack.
