Wayne Rooney is reportedly set to be offered a mammoth £700,000 per-week in wages to lure him away from Manchester United to China in the summer.
Daily Mirror have claimed that Wayne Rooney is set to receive a sumptuous offer to leave Manchester United in the summer of 2017. The 31-year-old Red Devils captain, who seems to have been relegated to a squad rotation role under Jose Mourinho, is on the radar of two Chinese Super League clubs, who are willing to offer wages of £700,000 per-week to the Englishman.
Wayne Rooney is perhaps one of the most decorated players to have graced England. However his career has regularly been riddled with criticism and controversies; unwarranted and undeservedly at times. The 31-year-old, who is England’s top scorer and second on the list of Manchester United’s all-time top goal-scorers.
The 31-year-old has recorded 3 goals and 9 assists in all competitions this season, a decent return given the amount of minutes that he has played up until now. Rooney’s current contract expires in 2019 but there have been talks of a move away for the forward.
Recent reports claim that the 31-year-old was offered to Napoli in the summer, and with his diminished role in the first-team setup under Jose Mourinho, the player could be on the move soon.
However Rooney is just two goals short of overtaking club legend Sir Bobby Charlton’s tally of 249 goals, and he is unlikely to want to move before he achieves this feat.
China is quickly proving to be a very lucrative option for the Englishman. Rooney had already rejected an approach from Chinese Super League outfit Beijing Guoan last summer. Now, it seems Beijing Guoan has retained interest in the 31-year-old and have been joined by fellow Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao in their pursuit of the United icon.
Chinese outfits have stolen a march on the European giants by securing stars like Oscar and Carlos Tevez, offering them wages to the tune of £400,000 and £615,000 per week respectively. But, Rooney’s offer is set to eclipse all of these wages, with the two clubs willing to offer the 31-year-old £700,000 per-week in order to bring the superstar to China.
Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao, the richest and the most decorated club in China, has superstars like Paulinho and Jackson Martinez on their roster. The club has triumphed in the last six league campaigns in a row and the addition of Wayne Rooney would further bolster their squad as the club aim to continue their dominance in China.
It is almost given that the 31-year-old will reach the milestone of 250 goals for Manchester United and become the highest goal-scorer in the club’s history by the end of the season. After that achievement is conquered, Rooney could seek a move if he fails to establish himself as regular name on the team sheet at Old Trafford.
