The captain of both Manchester United and England has endured a humiliating month. However the buzz is that Wayne Rooney could return for the Liverpool game, and Jurgen Klopp is well aware of this
Ahead of the clash of titans on Monday, the Reds manager has professed that he believes that Rooney has the quality and experience to cause Liverpool a lot of problems.
“I know a lot of what everyone thinks at the moment about Wayne Rooney and I cannot think the same things, even as a manager of Liverpool,” said Klopp ahead of the game, according to the Liverpool Echo.
“It’s not allowed that I like players from Manchester United but he is 30 years old and he has had a long, more than decent career in the Premier League.
“From my side he is a world class player and world class players are always a threat.”
Wayne Rooney was dropped to the bench for Manchester United’s last two Premier League games against Leicester City and Stoke City. The 31-year-old then faced the ignominy of sitting on the bench for England’s game against Slovenia.
Rooney is the highest goal-scorer for the Three Lions and the second highest for Manchester United. However his form of late has provoked harsh criticism, with pundits questioning his ability as he struggles to deal with the aging process that leaves many footballers down and out after hitting 30.
The former Everton player, who was born in Liverpool, could be recalled for the game against Liverpool though. Many pundits have backed him to return as Manchester United need experience and guile in midfield against a fast paced Reds set-up.
It remains to be seen if Jose Mourinho starts his captain, but Klopp is definitely not underestimating the under-fire Englishman.
