The Manchester United midfielder has failed to have an impact at Old Trafford since signing for the club last summer and could now be headed to the Bundesliga in January.
Dutch winger Memphis Depay has played only 12 minutes of football for Manchester United in the Premier League this season. The 22-year-old joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2015 amid much fanfare. Memphis had been the top scorer in the Eredivisie the previous season and Manchester United paid £25 million to bring him to Old Trafford.
The Dutchman has failed to have an impact though, and it looks like he is set to exit the Premier League to move to the Bundesliga. The broadsheet of German newspaper Bild states that Wolfsburg are keen to sign the Manchester United flop this January, as reported on Fussballtransfers.com.
Die Wolves are currently in 13th position in the Bundesliga table and have only scored four goals in six games. The club hierarchy are now looking at Depay to help address the club’s scoring issues. The German club would be hard-pressed to match the transfer fee that Manchester United paid for the Dutchman, but a loan deal could be worked out between the two clubs.
Memphis remains very highly rated despite his poor performances at United and manager Jose Mourinho may wish to send him out on loan rather than sell him outright.
The summer transfer window of 2015 saw former manager Louis van Gaal bring in some big names; following his departure however, many of these players are now on the fringe of the first team and fighting to find a way back in.
Bastian Schweinsteiger has been exiled to the reserve team, while Depay, Matteo Darmian and Morgan Schneiderlin are yet to start a Premier League game. The only signing from last summer who seems to have a future at the club is French forward Anthony Martial.
Depay, who earlier stated that Van Gaal was instrumental in his transfer to United, now finds himself under the tutelage of the ‘Special One’ Jose Mourinho. It remains to be seen if the Portuguese manager is convinced of Depay’s ability and keeps him at Old Trafford.
