Manchester United returned to winning ways after three defeats on the bounce as they beat Northampton 3-1 in the third round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
Michael Carrick opened the scoring for the Reds via an indirect free-kick before Northampton forward Alexander Revell equalised just minutes before the half-time whistle.
However, it was United who came out as the stronger team in the second half and goals from Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford saw Jose Mourinho’s men march into the fourth round with a 3-1 victory.
Captain Wayne Rooney was one of the few players in the United side who had a bad game and was once again slammed by fans on social media:

Going to give benefit of the doubt and assume Rooney’s not getting hooked so there’s a ready made excuse to leave him out on Saturday…
— Nick (@ManUnitedYouth) September 21, 2016
We are pathetic. Our captain controls our manager. We simply cannot drop Rooney if we want to. We are crashing
— Kazza?? (@Schweiniction) September 21, 2016
A fullback comes off and Rooney stays on. Oh hello Louis long time no see.
— Keith Russell (@Keith_Russell) September 21, 2016
Wayne Rooney resembles a great boxer trying to make a comeback when he’s had the fight punched out of him…sad to see in many ways #MUFC
— Kevin Palmer (@RealKevinPalmer) September 21, 2016
I don’t get how Rooney is captain of both his club and country. He doesn’t lead by example, he isn’t vocal and he offers virtually nothing.

Wayne Rooney is struggling against a league one side, LEAGUE ONE !!! How many more games/times is Jose Mourinho going to allow this. ? #MUFC
— Mancunian. (@ManUnitedWriter) September 21, 2016
The real positive is that we have found our captain’s level. Rooney struggling against a League One side shows where his game is at.

Very generous of Rooney to keep this interesting by missing an absolute sitter.
— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) September 21, 2016
The ones saying Rooney should be dropped are out of their minds… He should actually be banished from starting again for #MUFC
— Rafael Hernández (@RafaelH117) September 21, 2016
Rooney’s first touch is like Brad and Angelina, no longer there.
— Aryan (@theunitedmanc) September 21, 2016
I like Rooney, however has to be dropped for Leicester. Playing poorly & media / fans pressure on him! Needs to be taken out of spotlight
— Everything Man Utd (@everything_utd) September 21, 2016
Rooney’s performance against Watford was one of the worst I’ve seen from a player and he’s no better tonight. Time to sit on the bench
— Simon Dawkins (@simondawkins23) September 21, 2016
Herrera and Carrick – class.
Memphis – promising
Romero – terrifying
Rojo – bloody awful
Rooney – a game of nothing again.— TriggeRed. (@jonmikesav8) September 21, 2016
I struggle to fathom how some pundits and fans can genuinely argue that Rooney deserves to start. HOW. Stop lying to yourself.
