Jurgen Klopp is set to field a strong team against Derby as he believes Liverpool FC can win the EFL Cup

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is optimistic of his side’s chances to lift the EFL cup this season. Building up to their match against Derby County, the German said that he is likely to field a strong side

After a rather shaky start to the new Premier League season, Liverpool have managed to improve their performances and have also capitalised on the undoings of their fellow title rivals in England’s top-tier.

They began the campaign leaking three goals against Arsenal but were spared any blushes due to their prowess of their attackers on the day. However, in the following game, Klopp’s men came crashing down to earth, succumbing to a shock 2-0 defeat against newly-promoted side Burnley.

However, the Reds have now managed to win two games on the bounce and are in confident mood ahead of their third round EFL Cup clash against Derby County. Speaking to press ahead of the game, Klopp stated that he is backing his side to go all the way and lift the elusive trophy.

According to James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo, the German said:

“We go into a cup competition with the aim to win it. We have a really competitive game against a strong side.

“In my opinion we only have strong line ups. That’s good news. We will find a strong line up. We won’t rest 100% fit players.”

The Liverpool manager also heaped heavy praise on Tuesday’s oppositions despite them not enjoying the best of times in England’s second tier.

“I watch a lot of Championship football. I’m interested in how Huddersfield are doing. Derby are an ambitious club.

” If I was manager of Derby I’d be using this tournament to try to turn things around in league. This is big opportunity for them,” said a charismatic Jurgen Klopp.

During the press conference, Klopp also confirmed that Roberto Firmino has recuperated from an injury and has begun training with the first team. However, the Derby game might come a bit too early for him to feature from the outset.

The Liverpool boss ruled out Mamadou Sakho from Tuesday’s game as the French defender has not recovered completely to participate in a professional game. However, Joel Matip looks to be geared up for the game and is likely to start for the Reds.
