Atletico Madrid superstar Antoine Griezmann has revealed that he would consider leaving the club if and when Diego Simeone vacates his managerial position.
Antoine Griezmann has had a couple of blistering seasons at Atletico Madrid after making the move from fellow Liga BBVA club Real Sociedad. The French international, who was known for his wing-play, has now become a potent threat and a prolific forward under Diego Simeone. The Frenchman won the Golden Boot at Euro 2016 despite the hosts losing out on the trophy to Portugal in the final due to an extra-time goal.
The forward has been linked with sensational and potentially record-breaking moves to the Premier League, with Arsenal and Manchester United the only clubs named thus far. The French international signed a new contract with the Rojiblancos this June, extending his time at the club till 2021.
However, the new deal seems not to have deterred the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal, with reports that Jose Mourinho has already lined the forward up as a long-term replacement for Wayne Rooney. The Red Devils could shatter the new world-record transfer fee to bring Griezmann to Old Trafford, albeit next summer.
Griezmann, though, seems to have only Atletico on his mind and assured the Rojiblancos fans in an interview to Telefoot that he is happy at the club and has no plans to secure a move away from the Spanish capital.
However, Griezmann admitted that he considered a move away before extending his deal given Diego Simeone was linked with other clubs, and added that he may seek a move away from the club in the future only when Simeone decides to switch clubs or step down as Atletico manager.
Antoine told Telefoot, “I would only leave [Atletico] if Simeone was to go. The only thing I wanted to know was whether there was a possibility that Simeone would go to Paris Saint-Germain.
“Simeone is a very important person for me, and that is why I called him before renewing. He told me he was staying and that was sufficient for me. I’m happy in Spain and I have a lot of things to learn from him.”
It seems like Atletico Madrid is set to be the French forward’s home for a long time and the fans can heave a sigh of relief that the player will not look elsewhere at least as long as the Argentinian manager decides to stay at the club.
