David Moyes’ attempts at bringing English striker Danny Ings on loan to the Stadium of Light have been rebuffed by Liverpool.
The 24-year-old striker missed the majority of last season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury and has fallen behind the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino in the pecking order at Anfield. Sunderland hoped that Ings’ situation at Liverpool would be enough to tempt him away.
The Black Cats have already signed a promising young talent in Adnan Januzaj on loan from Manchester United, and manager David Moyes was hoping to land another good player from one of the Premier League’s big clubs. Sunderland are currently dependent on the ageing central striker Jermaine Defoe, and Ings would have been a good option for them to have.
However, Liverpool immediately rejected Sunderland’s offer to take the player on loan and are expected to reject any other offers for Premier League clubs for Ings as well, according to Football365.
This comes just a few weeks after Reds manager Jurgen Klopp stated that he regards Ings very highly. “We’re counting on Ingsy,” Klopp said, according to the Liverpool Echo. “He was injured since October last year and he needed time.
“That’s how it is. Now he’s getting better and better. He know himself that in the first two or three weeks of pre-season even though he scored in the games it was too intense for him.”
Ings had his break-out season in 2013-14, where his 21 goals for Burnley in the Championship helped the club gain promotion to the top flight. Ings scored 11 goals in 35 appearances in the Premier League next season for Burnley even though the Clarets were eventually relegated.
The Englishman then joined Liverpool last summer, with the transfer fee of £8 million including performance related add-ons decided by a tribunal appointed by the FA. He scored three goals in nine appearances for the Reds last season and could once again prove to be a useful squad player under the guidance of Klopp this season.
