Indian goalkeeper Subrata Pal will receive the Arjuna award and will be the first goalkeeper to win it since Brahmanand Sankhwalkar, who won it in 1997.
The 29 year old will receive the award on National Sports Day (the 29th of August) from President Pranab Mukherjee. His performances throughout his career have always been rated highly as he has gone on to become one of India’s greatest goalkeepers ever.
On receiving the news, Pal was quoted saying to Goal.com,”The Arjuna Award is one of the highest Awards for sportsperson in our country. I need to thank all my Coaches, my Teammates, AIFF, the Football fraternity and my family who stood by me and supported me over all these years.”
Pal has had a glittering career, one in which he has provided some outstanding performances.
Apart from playing for most of the high profile clubs in India, he also had a stint with Danish side FC Vestsjaelland, although he never made any first team appearances for them.
Peerless FC hold a surprisingly lackluster Mohun Bagan to drab draw in the Calcutta Football League (CFL)
Peerless FC put up a spirited performance and held Mohun Bagan to a goalless draw in the CFL match held at the Mohun Bagan ground on Monday. Mohun Bagan, as usual, played with a string of youngsters. They hardly created any chances. Scottish striker Darryl Duffy was ineffective throughout the match and new foreign recruit Daniel Bidemi could not make an impact. The result gives arch rivals East Bengal a bit of breathing space at the top of the table, as they now lead Mohun Bagan by two points.
Chennaiyin FC to prepare for the upcoming Indian Super League by once again practicing in Italy.
The Chennai franchise co-owned by MS Dhoni and Abhishek Bachchan will begin their month-long pre-season camp from Tuesday in Perugia, Italy. They trained at the same location last year before going on to win ISL 2015.
Coach Marco Materazzi told Goal.com,”The month-long pre-season camp last year made a big difference in our eventual results. The players got the best possible preparation with excellent facilities and some very competitive practice matches.This year we want to have a similar preparation and also improve ourselves further following the lessons of last season.”
Chennaiyin FC will train at the Stadio Ellera, located 164 kilometers north of Rome and will also play a few practice matches against clubs of lower divisions.
Their training begins on the 23rd of August.
