The Indian National Football team takes on Turkmenistan in the final match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers at Kochi. India are destined to finish last in the group and hence will have to play in the playoffs to secure a berth in the third round of the 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers. A win however in this match will be a big shot in the arm for Constantine and his boys as it will prove to some extent that India were not hugely behind Turkmenistan and Guam who have finished third and fourth in the group.

Team News And Tactical Brief

India

Constantine is likely to adopt an attacking approach in a bid to win this match and build on a strong run of domestic performances that saw the team beat Guam and Afghanistan on way to the SAFF Championships triumph. The Blue Tigers will be rejuvenated by the return of their inspirational skipper Sunil Chhetri who missed the match against Iran due to a groin injury. A large crowd turned up in  Thiruvananthapuram where India played in the SAFF Championships and a large crowd turnout in Kochi will no doubt boast the morale of the players.

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu will be the key player for India
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu will be the key player for India

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu had a great game under the bar against Iran where he pulled off some outstanding saves. He again will be one of the key players as the Blue Tigers look for a win against Turks. Sandesh Jhingan had a good outing at the back against Iran in Tehran where he pulled up a couple of super tackles. A lot will be riding on him in this match as well.

Arnab Mondal should return to the team after having being benched in the match against Iran. Mondal hasn’t been in the best of form recently and a good performance in this match will go a long way in boasting his morale. Pritam Kotal and Narayan Das had a torrid time against Iran on the right and left side of the defense and a better performance will be expected from the young duo in this match.

Constantine is likely to adopt a 4-3-3 formation and it will be Pronay Halder of Mohun Bagan who will lead the midfield. Halder gave a good account of himself against Iran and will be looking to build on that performance. He is likely to be accompanied by Rowlin Borges and Harmanjot Singh Khabra in the midfield. Cavin Lobo or Md. Rafique may be seen in action if Constantine wants to field an attacking midfielder.

Despite being named in the 23 member squad, Sunil Chhetri isn’t yet fully fit and it looks like he will be seen in action only in the second half. This means another start for Holicharan Narzary in the forward line. Udanta Singh who made his debut against Iran is expected to keep his place in the squad. The 21 year old had a quiet first half in Tehran but showed a couple of glimpses of his talent in the second half and he will be looking forward to a better showing in this match. Jeje who scored against Turkmenistan in the away game is expected to complete the three man forward line for the hosts.

Possible Starting XI (4-3-3): Gurpreet Singh Sandhu; Narayan Das, Sandesh Jhingan, Arnab Mondal, Pritam Kotal; Pronay Halder, Harmanjot Singh Khabra, Rowllin Borges; Holicharan Narzary , Jeje Lalpekhlua, Udanta Singh

Turkmenistan under the tutelage of Amangylyç Koçumow have had an impressive campaign that has seen them finish unbeaten at home. The team had a week long training camp in Dubai prior to the game against India.

29 year old Mammet Orazmuhammedow is expected to start under the post for the visitors. The defense will be led by Ýagmyrmyrat Annamyradow who comes in with the experience of having played for Uzbek club Navbahor in 2007-08. He will be accompanied in the heart of the defense by Mekan Saparow who scored in the team’ s 3-1 defeat to Iran in the qualifiers. Zafar Babajanow and Myrat Hamraýew are likely to complete the four man backline for the visitors.

Key Players

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (India)

Over the last one year Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has established himself as the first choice custodian for The Blue Tigers and he has justified it with a string of impressive performances. With India expected to take an attacking approach in this match, Sandhu will have to play a key role in keeping Turkmenistan away from scoring.

Artur Geworkýan (Turkmenistan)

Artur Geworkýan is one of the most important players for Turkmenistan and will look to dominate the Indian midfielders and create chances for his team. Having won the MVP award in 2011 AFC Cup, Geworkýan has played in the Uzbek league for almost nine years now and will look to make use of his experience in this match.

Prediction

India 2-1 Turkmenistan

Bolstered by the presence of Sunil Chhetri, The Blue Tigers go into the match as slight favorites as Turkmenistan have named a weaker squad. A full house is expected at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi which will further boast the morale of the players who will be looking to end their campaign with a win. TheHardTackle predicts a win for the hosts.
