Trabzonspor defender Salih Dursun was sent off in a comical fashion after he brandished a red card and showed it to the referee in a Turkish Süper Lig match against Galatasaray on Sunday.
The Turkish Süper Lig encounter between Trabzonspor and Galatasaray was marred by ugly scenes as referee Deniz Ates Bitnel was shown a red card by defender Salih Dursun on Sunday night. Dursun brandished the red card as a way of protesting against the referee’s decision to send off Trabzonspor player Luis Cavanda in the 87th minute.
Dursun, was given his marching orders immediately afterwards, and was the fourth Trabzonspor player to be sent off by the referee in an ill tempered clash at the Türk Telekom Arena. Despite Trabzonspor being reduced to 7 players, it took an 89th minute penalty by Selcuk Inan to seal all three points for Galatasaray on the night. Earlier in the match, German forward Lukas Podolski equalised for Galatasaray in the 64th minute after Erkan Zengin had given Trabzonspor the lead in the first half.
The incident in Istanbul was reminiscent of the on-field events in 1995 when England star Paul Gascoigne waved a card at referee Dougie Smith, but was only cautioned for his indiscretions during Rangers’ 7-0 win over Hibernian. Galatasaray’s 2-1 win over Trabzonspor took them to third spot in the league table, 13 points behind league leaders and bitter rivals Fenerbahce.
