Paul Pogba was the subject of intense transfer speculation in the previous summer transfer window, and the hype surrounding the former Manchester United youth player is only likely to increase in the coming transfer windows, particularly if the France international performs well at the 2016 European Championships in his home country.
Juventus have thus far remained admirably steadfast in their refusal to do business for the youngster, and although informal talks were reportedly held with FC Barcelona, there was no agreement reached.
Spanish newspaper AS is now reporting that Real Madrid are preparing to rival their great La Liga rivals for the signature of the 22-year-old, and have the edge over the Catalans from the point of view of finance. The report suggests that prising Pogba away from Turin might take upwards of €100 million, but Los Blancos are unlikely to be fazed by the amount.
However, AS report that the animosity between Pogba’s representative Mino Raiola and Real Madrid could prevent any deal from happening, with the super-agent reportedly offended when former Real manager Carlo Ancelotti dismissed talk of the club’s interest in his most prized client.
Is there space for Pogba at Real Madrid?
The obvious question to ask is whether Real Madrid really need Paul Pogba. Although the Spanish giants have usually not made that consideration in the past when chasing marquee signings, the lack of balance in the team has been cited for their failure to beat any of the ‘big’ teams this season in the league.
Perhaps a top-quality defensive midfielder is a more pressing need, although former FC Porto midfielder Casemiro was being used on a fairly regular basis by former manager Rafa Benítez. In terms of the type of signing he would be — a bona fide ‘Galáctico’ — he seems more like a player Real Madrid would sign, but given FC Barcelona’s willingness to spend big in recent times, it could well be that the Frenchman ends up playing alongside Lionel Messi.
