Francesco Totti has been one of the most loyal servants of AS Roma over a career spanning more than two decades, but his wife now feels that the Italian legend is finally ready to hang up his boots from professional football.
Now at the ripe old age of 39, the striker has been struggling a lot with keeping up his fitness in top level Italian football, and this is what seems to be driving the Azzurri . legend towards his retirement from professional football, believes his wife Ilary Blasi.
“The time has come. Francesco is going to be 40 next year. He has enjoyed all this so much that I really think that right now he is desiring something else. But he will remain involved in football for sure,” said Blasi, who is also a famous TV personality, to an Italian weekly magazine Oggi. [via La Gazzetta dello Sport]
Hamstring plaguing Totti
Totti has had a rather troublesome hamstring that has kept him out of action since September. While there has been no confirmation about his retirement from the man himself, the rumours are flying all over the place.
“As long as the body holds up, I am going forward [with my career in professional football],” Totti had assured the Italian media a couple of months back. That however all seems to be in doubt now, as the 2006 World Cup winner continues to struggle with his injuries.
The AS Roma fans have shared a lot of fond memories with Totti, who has won the Serie A in 2000/01, and the Coppa Italia in 2007 and 2008, and would certainly rue the fact that the career of one of their evergreen heroes would now be coming to an end.
