Arsenal FC legend believes Tottenham Hotspur are genuine title contenders this season

Arsenal FC legend Ian Wright believes North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur are genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur have been winning over many neutrals this season with their style of play under Mauricio Pochettino, and their results have suggested that there is enough substance about them to challenge the best teams in the division.

.

Former Arsenal FC striker Ian Wright, who is now a columnist for British tabloid ‘The Sun’, has suggested Spurs have what it takes to go all the way this season, and has heaped praise on young England midfielder Dele Alli.

Tottenham are title contenders this season

Pochettino’s side currently have 36 points from 20 games, and lie 6 points behind league leaders Arsenal FC. Gunners legend Ian Wright has suggested that Spurs have enough mental toughness this season not to implode, as they have been known to do in the past.

Wright wrote in his column (via Daily Mirror): “There is a spine to the team that suggests there is no way they will blow up after putting themselves in a challenging position, like they have in the past.

“I could be wrong. I hope I am! But even though it was a bit worrying they didnai??i??t get the three points their performance at Goodison deserved, I think they are serious title contenders this time.”

Wright also heaped praise on young England international Dele Alli, who has been in impressive form of late in a more attacking role for Tottenham, contributing directly to 6 goals in his last 7 appearances.

“Alli was very comfortable in an environment that a lot of youngsters would find quite intimidating, certainly at first,” added the former Arsenal FC star. “He puffed his chest out and almost dared people to say he wasnai??i??t ready [to play against France].

“Heai??i??s also got wonderful technical ability. But so do a lot of other young players. It usually takes them longer to get that self-belief and confidence.”

Despite Tottenham form, Arsenal and Manchester City will compete for title

Although there is no doubt Tottenham have been impressive this season, it is difficult to imagine them going neck and neck with the likes of Arsenal FC and Manchester City this season.

Not only do they lack the quality and depth, but they will also have to participate in the UEFA Europa League, and the fatigue that can accumulate from those games could have an impact in the Premier League — particularly given the high-intensity pressing game that Pochettino likes his team to play. Top four, on the other hand, is a very realistic target for Spurs, and this season arguably presents their best opportunity in a while to qualify for the Champions League.
