Wayne Rooney scored again, but Bayern came from behind to defeat Man Utd in a match which brought back the memories of Camp Nou’99. Frank Ribery equalised through a deflected free-kick, and Olic scored the winner in injury-time to ensure a deserved victory for the home side.
Wayne Rooney returned to the starting line-up for Manchester United after missing the game against Bolton on Saturday. Sir Alex named the same five man midfield that played at the San Siro while Gary Neville started at right back.
Robben failed to recover from the calf injury he had picked up at the weekend and Bastian Schweinsteiger missed the game through suspension. Mario Gomez and Klose were left on the bench as Luis Van Gaal opted to start with a front two of Olic and Muller.
Manchester United got off to the best possible start, as Rooney scored after just sixty-four seconds. Nani delivered a free kick, after being brought down by Demichelis near the corner flag, which was deflected straight into the path of an unmarked Rooney, who made no mistake and volleyed-in with his left foot.
Bayern tried to recover from the early setback as Demichelis sent his header over the bar following a corner from Altintop. At the other end, Nani had a chance to increase United’s lead but fired a left foot shot wide of the post from ten yards out.
Ribery delivered a brilliant ball over the top of Ferdinand and Vidic for Atintop, but the Turkish International’s first touch was poor and the ball was safely gathered by Van Der Sar. Ivica Olic, also got a glorious chance to bring the home side level after Altintop’s mishit shot fell straight to him inside the six-yard box but the Croatian failed to make any contact with the ball.
Rooney, at the other end, uncharacteristically missed a great opportunity to double his side’s lead as he shot straight at the goal keeper after collecting a cross from Darren Fletcher from the left hand side.
Half-time arrived with no further trouble for either team, as both sides failed to create much in the dying moments which saw Bayern dominate possession as United were happy to go into the break with a one goal lead.
Second half started with an early chance to Olic who shot straight at Van Der Sar from a tight angle. The United goalkeeper was again called into action as he saved a deflected shot from Muller. Soon after, Altintop unleashed a shot after beating the United back-line but the Dutchman parried the ball away from the danger area.
The pressure created by the home side finally paid off, though from a lucky break, with just fifteen minutes from time. Neville was penalized and booked for handling the ball just outside the area. Ribery stepped up to take the resulting free-kick which was deflected off Rooney’s foot into the net with Van Der Sar rooted to the spot.
United were unlucky not to go back in front as Vidic saw his header crash against the bar following a corner.
Van Der Sar again came to United’s rescue as he spectacularly saved a powerful shot from Mario Gomez. It seemed that the game would end in a draw, but Olic dispossessed Evra inside United’s penalty box and cut inside Ferdinand before finishing brilliantly to win it for Bayern Munich in injury time, bringing back the memories of the famous night at Camp Nou.
The night became a nightmare for the Red Devils as Rooney limped off the pitch under mysterious circumstances, after the full-time whistle.

TheHardTackle’s PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Frank Ribery (Bayern Munich)
In the absence of Arjen Robben, the onus was on the Frenchman and he did not disappoint. His menacing runs on the left flank were discomforting for United and he was involved in almost every attack. It was his free-kick which led to Bayern’s equaliser.
TheHardTackle’s REFEREE REPORT CARD
Name : De Bleeckere
Grade : B (Satisfactory)
The referee was spot on with most of the decisions. There were no major penalty claims, which certainly made his job a bit easier.
