Manchester United star midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has backed Louis van Gaal’s claim that they can win the Champions League, claiming that the spirit in the squad will see them through.

Manchester United lost their opening UEFA Champions League game to PSV Eindhoven, however, the mood in the camp of United is that they can go on and win the Champions League.

Louis van Gaal claimed that his experience in winning the competition in the past will help guide United to European glory as they prepare to face Wolfsburg.

Schweinsteiger backs United to win Champions League

Schweinsteiger, who joined United from Bayern Munich, won the Champions League in 2013 with the German giant and also reached two finals in 2010 and 2012.

Backing his manager’s claim of the Champions League triumph, Schweinsteiger was quoted saying by . ESPN FC: “Yes, I think so. But of course first of all we have to do our work. We lost the first match against PSV Eindhoven. As the manager said, we have to win our games at home.”

When asked what will be the decisive factor for United if they are to win the competition, he said: “The spirit of the players.”

Schweinsteiger wary of Wolfsburg

The German midfielder is preparing to face the team that finished runners-up last season when he won the league with Bayern Munich.

Wolfsburg also beat Bayern this season in the German Super Cup and Schweinsteiger reckons they are a strong side.

He said: “They have a good team and last three of four years improved a lot.

“It’s a big challenge for us. I have some friends in the team in the German national players who play for them.

“I know Andre Schurrle with the national team.

“I sent message to Dante as well as he’s really a friend of mine. We knew we would play against each other but it is nothing special.

“I scored my first goal away at Wolfsburg so I have my good memories. They are not easy to play against. They are always tough matches.”
