Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United won back to back games against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa. However, their winning start came to a halt against Newcastle United, as the Magpies held out for a goalless draw at Old Trafford.
Wayne Rooney opened the scoring in the 4th minute for the home side, only for the goal to be ruled out as the striker was marginally offside when Adnan Januzaj found him with a through ball. Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chris Smalling hit the bar and the post respectively, while Tim Krul put in a splendid performance to get his team a point.
The Dutch keeper saved a number of one on one chances and kept out Javier Hernandez’s low shot with the help of his legs. New signing Florian Thauvin had the chance to win the game for the Toons in the dying moments; however, he failed to connect with a low cross from Papiss Cisse.
Manchester United fans took to Twitter to express their concerns over the misfiring forward line that has scored only two goals in the opening three games. Captain Wayne Rooney has also faced severe criticism after the forward failed to score for the 10th game in a row.
