Sergio Romero Hopes David De Gea Stays With Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is hopeful that David De Gea stays at the club. The Spaniard has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, and his future still appears uncertain following his exclusion from the squad in United’s opening Premier League fixtures.

De Gea has one year left on his current deal at Old Trafford. Louis Van Gaal, the Red Devils manager, has dropped De Gea entirely from the squad for the first three games and Romero started all of them, keeping a clean sheet in two of them.

Romero praised De Gea’s attitude and professionalism

The Argentina international was quoted by . BBC Sport, he said:

“I hope De Gea stays here. He’s a good team-mate who always works hard.

“It surely is a difficult situation for him but when one is a great professional like he is, and one has a good head like his, you keep training to get better day by day because he could play on a weekend.

“It happened to me last year in Sampdoria. I was not playing but I was working as if I was going to play.”

Romero ‘privileged’ to work with De Gea and Valdes

Romero has not been at the club for long, having moved on a free from Sampdoria earlier in the window. However, the Argentine has reserved special praise for his fellow shot-stoppers – De Gea and Victor Valdes. Victor Valdes has reportedly been told that he’s surplus to requirements, and was criticized by Van Gaal, who blasted his attitude for failure to comply with his philosophy. Van Gaal claimed that the Spaniard’s failure to play for the U-21’s last term brought an end to his Old Trafford career, something refuted by Valdes.

“One has won everything and the other has his career ahead of him to continue to win things,” he added.

“For me it’s a privilege and it makes me happy to work with those two.”

With De Gea’s future still hanging in the balance, it appears likely that Romero will continue in goal for Manchester United when the Red Devils take on Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Saturday, hoping to make it three wins out of three to begin the season.
