“I’ll Go If Owners Want Me To”, Rodgers Apologizes For “Embarrassing” Defeat

Brendan Rodgers’s position as Liverpool boss has been in doubt for sometime now. The Reds boss hasn’t exactly had a great business end of the season as his side has only picked up 8 points from the last 9 games, an unacceptable outcome from the previous season’s runners-up.

There had been reassurances in the previous few days that the Northern Irishman will get the backing of the owners as they feel that Suarez and Sturridge’s loss hasn’t helped Rodgers’s case. However, after a 6-1 defeat to Stoke City in Steven Gerrard’s penultimate game as Liverpool player, things look very grim and shakey for Rodgers. Who, to be fair, has understood that this game could change things as he has gone from being “150% sure” (to stay on) to the possibility of him being sacked.

Rodgers started by apologizing to the supporters, “The Liverpool supporters deserve an apology. It was embarrassing. The supporters have every right to be angry. That first half was awful. I take full responsibility as the manager. We have to go away and fix it.

“If the owners want me to go, I go. Simple as that. But I feel I have a lot to offer at Anfield. I understand questions being asked. I still feel I have a lot to offer here.

Liverpool V Crystal Palace“My pride makes me want to be in the job. I love the club and the job. But if owners say to me I go, then I go.

At the same time, Rodgers also said that he wanted to continue as Liverpool boss, “But I want to be here. I understand we need to do better than we have in the last few months. I am convinced I have a plan to take us forward.”

On the match, and the humiliating defeat, Rodgers said, “We made too many mistakes defensively and individually. We were beaten too easily and were not competitive enough. We were very, very poor in that first half.

“It was always going to be a big job in the summer and today’s result would certainly ratify that.

“We understand the job ahead and we will be much better than today going forward.

“We have got to be much better than we have been for the last six or eight weeks. We will work tirelessly to look to put on a better show next season.”
