After a season that saw Liverpool play the most exciting brand of football, terrorize the opposition at home, finish in the second place in the most exciting, albeit agonizing fashion, it was a unanimous thought that this season would be one where the Reds challenge for the title again, compete in the prestigious Champions League competition again. Many even thought Liverpool have a shot at winning the European trophy.
But things areai??i??different.
While winning the title or the Champions League was never Brendan Rodgersai??i??s aim for the season, as a few rational heads would agree, Liverpool were still expected to be a dominant, competing force in the various competitions. They were back, after all.
Yet, things areai??i??different.
The departure of Luis Suarez left a bitter taste in the supportersai??i?? mouths- not the Fernando Torres bitter, where the expression was just anger; but the sad bitter, where they wanted nothing more than the controversial Uruguayan to rubbish the Barcelona rumors and let them heave a sigh of relief. ai???No. He is ours. He loves the club, the supporters. We have stood by him through thick and thin. Surely, he will stayai??i??. But he didnai??i??t. And fans understood. Suarez was turning out to be a liability. Controversies after controversies. A period of pure-dedication on the field, but a mad moment later, things were back to square one. Many even thought, perhaps rightly, that Suarez engineered his move away from the club.
But coming to the matters at hand, Liverpool are presently ninth in the league, with ten points in seven games. Three wins, three losses and a draw is not a record to boast. The very basic thing remains that Liverpool have lost two games they should have clearly won on paper- West Ham and Aston Villa. Not only that, they have had very meek outings against Basel, Ludogorets and Middlesbrough.
There are some very visible problems. The midfield is average at best. Steven Gerrard is not a defensive midfielder. Yes, he has some good games now and then, his free-kicks are still the same, and he makes these impeccable passes that can be game-changing, but the very problem is that he is stuck in this position where he is not doing the defensive job and he is not able to contribute to the offensive (and if the last 15 minutes against West Brom were anything to go by, the Liverpool captain is still pretty good at being his offensive self). Gerrardai??i??s presence in the holding role causes further damage as Jordan Henderson gets limited to being Gerrardai??i??s water-boy. Henderson is good at running forward, linking up with the attackers. But in the present scenario, he gets stuck helping Gerrard. He is constantly running forward as that is his main job and what he is good at, and then running backwards, helping Gerrard rectify his errors.
The problem to this problem is that Rodgers doesnai??i??t have a defensive midfielder in the side he trusts. Lucasai??i??s best days are clearly behind him and Emre Can is out injured and his positional sense doesnai??i??t make him the best player to do the job. However, he is 20, and is very talented so it would be incorrect to make too many judgements.
The absence of Joe Allen from the midfield triangle or diamond has been brought to the fore and if the saying ai???You only realize someoneai??i??s presence in his absenceai??i?? is true, Allen is the best example for this. The Welshman was the key to Liverpoolai??i??s 2 victories (he has played 3 matches so far). He didnai??i??t start against Southampton, but came off the bench and made a lot of impact. He eases the pressure off Gerrard, lets Henderson surge forward, causes the opposite attackers all sorts trouble with his energy and ability on the ball. Allen is a perfect example of ai???Jack of all trades, master of noneai??i??. While he is not absolutely fantastic at one thing- no, he is not a Mascherano or Alonso level CDM- but he is good at a lot of things.
The midfield, which has been Liverpoolai??i??s main problem so far will be greatly boosted by Allenai??i??s return because the evident lack of speed and urgency in the second third of the pitch, something Liverpool were synonymous with last season- fast tempo, releasing the ball quickly, counter-attacks- can start with his return.
Daniel Sturridge has clearly been missed. His quick and clever movement in the box has been replaced with Mario Balotelli or Rickie Lambertai??i??s target-man sort of a figure. Liverpool have only thrived with pacey attackers in the recent past, ones who run forward and link up and feed off chances. Be it Suarez or Torres, theyai??i??ve all been fast players.
Balotelli is a good option B. Or an option A with Sturridgeai??i??s presence as well. So often, the midfield has started the attack. Steven Gerrard to Adam Lallana to Raheem Sterling to Mario Balotelli. But once the ball reaches Balotelli everything becomes extremely slow and there is a visible loss of momentum- a complete opposite to last season.
Sturridge too, returns after the international break and his return will be crucial to the side. People can argue that there were injuries and the only time Liverpool were at full strength; they won 3-0 over a hapless Tottenham.
Liverpool need to get things going again. The aim after last seasonai??i??s success was going to be sustaining the effort. What is the point of finishing with 100+ goals and in the second position if you are not going to follow it up with a top 4 finish.
For now, things like competition for the top 4 spots shouldnai??i??t be discussed since the Reds first need to start things for themselves. Once the Merseyside club is back on track, only then can we even dwell in the fact that each spot is going to be a two(or more)-horse race. It is of course not all a lost cause and the one big upside is that there is a lot of scope of improvement. A win in the next three Premier League matches- QPR (A); Hull City (H); Newcastle (A) would mean that the club has 19 points after 10 matches. Last season, Liverpool had 20 points in 10 games. So things wonai??i??t be looking that bad.
