Borussia Dortmund have turned down the opening bid of ai??i??15 million plus bonuses for Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos by Arsenal FC.
Arsenal are in desperate need of signing another center back before the close of the transfer window and the Gunners have made their move to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos with an opening bid of ai??i??15 million plus bonuses, which has reportedly been turned down by the German club.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos was signed from Werder Bremen in 2013 and he made 28 appearances for the Dortmund at the center of the defence last season. The 26-year-old was initially signed as a third choice center back by Dortmund, but injury to Nevan Subotic provided them with plenty of opportunities alongside Mats Hummels. Papastathopoulos produced some consistent performances at the back and was rewarded with a place in the top XI of 2013/14 Bundesliga.
The Greece international, who has already won 51 caps for his national side, has now attracted attention from Arsenal who are keen on strengthening their defence before the close of this transfer window. The Gunners are short in numbers at the back following the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Manchester United this summer. The arrival of Calum Chambers has provided Wenger with back-up option, but the English defender is still inexperienced and there are question marks over the fitness of both Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny over a long period of time.
Reports in Germany suggest that the English club have made an opening bid of ai??i??15 million plus bonuses for the Papastathopoulos, but Dortmund have turned down that offer.
