Liverpool FC’s Joe Allen has today been linked with a move to arch rivals Manchester United.
The report has been run by several British Media outlets and claims that the Welshman is a shock target for Louis van Gaal who wants to add steel to the United midfield before the transfer window closes.
United are planning to make a A?20m bid for the 24-year-old and van Gaal even had Allen watched during the Reds 3-1 defeat at champions Manchester City on Monday night according to the Daily Star.Ai??
He is believed to have caught the eye of United’s Dutch coach when he impressed for Wales in a friendly against Holland in June.
Allen started his professional football career with Swansea City and was part of the Welsh side’s youth set-up from the age of nine. HeAi??made his league debut for Swansea as a 17 year old in a 6ai??i??3 defeat to Blackpool on the final day of the League One season under manager Roberto Martinez. The Ai??midfielder was always highly rated at his club both under Martinez, and then under Brendan Rodgers. So much so that when Rodgers joined Liverpool from Swansea in 2012, he asked the club management to buy the player he dubbed ‘Welsh Xavi’. Allen signed for the Merseyside club for a reported sum ofAi??A?15m. The 24 year old has made 65 appearances for the Reds in all competitions till date.
His first season was criticized by football pundits as well as the Kop faithful. He has been incredibly patchy with his performances. Allen has had some great games in a Red shirt and some bad ones. He hasn’t had a run of good games for the Reds. However, this has been attributed to the knocks he has picked up which have kept him out for significant portions. He missed 9 games in the 2012/13 season and 14 in the 2013/14 season. Towards the end of last season, the Wales international put on good performances for his side. This season, he impressed in his cameo appearance against Southampton. This resulted in Rodgers naming him in the starting squad against City and the Welshman didn’t disappoint. In a 3-1 defeat, Allen looked like the only good thing going on for the visitors.
Reports linking him with a move to Manchester United is pretty bizarre mainly because the two clubs share such an intense rivalry and have hardly ever made eyes to directly purchase a player from the opposite side. The last playerAi??to leave Anfield for Old Trafford was Allenby Chilton when he joined United from Liverpool in 1938. In the recent past, Micheal Owen has shifted camps, but not directly.
United certainly need strengthening in the midfield, especially for that holding role. Links to Daley Blind and Arturo Vidal indicate that they want to not let this void be a problem this season. However, it seems highly unlikely that the Manchester side will make a bid for Allen and even if they do, it would be even more unlikely that Liverpool will entertain such a bid. Even if the rivalry is not put in the question, Allen seems like an important part of the Liverpool squad in the coming season. Lucas’s departure seems on the cards and this could make the Welshman a started for the club too. With four competitions, Rodgers would also want depth and cover for every spot and wouldn’t want to sell a player to a rival.
Kristoffer Peterson completes transfer to Dutch side FC Utrecht.
The 19-year-old Swede departed the Dutch club three-and-a-half years after arriving from Savedalens IF in January 2011. The forward didn’t make a senior competitive appearance for the Reds. He rose to prominence in this season’s pre-season tour. The player scored in consecutive friendlies against Brondby and Preston North End last month, which earned him a place in the squad for the club’s pre-season tour in America.
