Arsenal FC are interested in signing Liverpool FC defender Daniel Agger, who faces an uncertain future at Anfield.
Daniel Agger faces an uncertain future at Liverpool following the arrival of Dejan Lovren from Southampton. The Danish international has been linked with a move away from Anfield this summer and according to latest reports Arsenal are lining up a bid to sign him, as they look for Thomas Vermaelenai??i??s replacement.
The 29-year-old came up through the ranks at BrA?ndby before joining Liverpool in 2006. The Danish international slowly established himself as an integral part of squad and has made 232 appearances in the eight and a half season he has spent so far at Anfield. Agger formed a good partnership with Martin Skrtel since the Slovakianai??i??s arrival at the club, but last season he dropped down the pecking order after the arrival of Mamdou Sakho.
Agger made 16 starts in the league as Brendan Rodgers preferred the Skrtel-Sakho partnership at the back, while Kolo Toureai??i??s presence in the squad also provided him with a lot of competition. The center back, who was appointed as the vice-captain after the departure of Jamier Carragher, was linked with Barcelona last summer, but Rodgers managed to retain him.
This season though Agger is almost certain to leave Anfield, following the arrival of Dejan Lovren from Southampton. The Danish defender is unhappy about lack of playing time and has hinted at his departure last month, in an interview.
“It is no secret that I had problems last season and I am considering things.
“How things turned out last season is not acceptable for me.
“I am here now and it is up to me to show the coach that I should play.” Ai??- Agger said last month.
Since then Agger has been linked with a move back to his former club BrA?ndby. The Danish club confirmed their interest in taking him back, but will now face competition from Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger, who has been a long-time admirer of Agger, is reportedly lining up a move for the defender this summer. Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is on the verge of leave the Emirates, with both Barcelona and Manchester United keen to sign him, and the Gunners are in the market for a new center back.
Wenger sees Agger as the perfect replacement for Vermaelen, as he is similarly left footed and experienced. Reports suggest that Arsenal are working on a A?12 bid to sign the defender, whose current contract with Liverpool expires in 2016.
