Brendan Rodgers said that Liverpool are still not done with their summer business and are going to make a few more additions.
Liverpool are currently on their pre-season tour at the United States of America. The Reds won against Manchester City on Wednesday evening- the came back from behind twice and ultimately defeated the Sky Blues on penalties in the International Champions Cup.
Post-match, Brendan Rodgers was asked about the signings he has made so far. Liverpool have been a very busy club this summer and have already roped in six players and sold Luis Suarez on a high profile transfer to La Liga giants FC Barcelona. When he was asked about the summer business, Rodgers insisted that the club is looking to secure a few more names in the next month to help their chances next season when they compete in four competitions, including the Champions League- after a gap of five years.
“We still have some positions that we want to fill within the squad so that by the end of August we have a strong group of players to go forward with. We’ve still got some business to do”, said the Liverpool boss.
The Northern Irishman was specifically quizzed about centre-back Sebastian Coates. The Uruguayan was brought in by Kenny Dalglish and has been highly rated since his young days. In fact, he won the Best Young Player of the Tournament at the 2011 Copa America. However, his recurring injuries have restricted him from playing for the Reds on a regular basis. Brendan Rodgers has given him the chance to stake his claim with a number of appearances during pre-season.
Rodgers said, “Every player has an opportunity. Seba was out for a lot of last season. He’s done well in pre-season, he has been very composed on the ball and he passes it well. He has done well.”
Rodgers spoke about the new signings and hailed the smooth manner in which these additions have adapted to the Liverpool way, their transition and adjustment.
Ai??”We’ve brought in specific players for specific roles, players that have the profile of how we work. It’s going to take a little bit more time than normal in terms of their induction”, he said
“But for a lot of the players that have come in, the transition has been very smooth – they are good characters with good personality and fit the criteria that we want in terms of the model of our game.Ai??That should make the adjustment that bit easier. Of course some of them are young and coming to a different country, like Emre Can. That will take a little bit of time.
“But what we have seen overall is something that has been a trademark of this team over the last 18 months – character. Even in a pre-season game, it was highly competitive and the players showed character to keep going and come back.Ai??They made some very good blocks and defended well. It was a really good game (against Man City). The players are transitioning very well, though it will take a little bit of time.”
