After being part of Germany’s World Cup winning squad, Borussia Dortmund signs the German defender Matthias Ginter for 10 million Euros
Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund confirmed the signing of 20 year old FC Freiburg defender Matthias Ginter on Thursday. Ginter, who represented his country in U19, U21 competitions, was also a part of Germany’s World Cup winning squad and is said to be replacement for Matt Hummels, who is rumored to be leaving the club this season. Due to the already packed German back unit, Ginter was not able to play in a single game in Germany’s successful World Cup campaign, Ai??but his being there in the final 23 speaks volumes about the quality and temperament that he possesses.
“BVB have confirmed the signing of Matthias Ginter (20) from SC Freiburg. He signs until 2019 and will wear number 28.” Ai??stated the club’s official twitter account while announcing his signing. The player has been signed on a five-year contract.
While speaking with BVB’s official website, Dortmund’s director of sport Michael Zorc said, “Matthias has always been a strong and versatile German top talent. We are pleased and proud that he has decided for Dortmund. The “BVB” starts in three competitions therefore we decided to start into the season with four strong defenders” indicating that the talented German will be a force to reckon with in the upcoming years.”
Ginter was extremely impressive with his consistent performances for Freiburg last season, he won 114 aerial duels, made 65 interceptions & 141 clearances in the Bundesliga last season, which made him undoubtedly the best young defender playing in the Bundesliga circuit.
Ginter himself was extremely pleased with the move to Dortmund. He released a statement which stated: “A childhood dream comes true for me. I was always a great BVB fan and now I can wear the jersey of my favourite team. I would like to take the next step in my sporting development with Dortmund. I am already looking forward to the incredible atmosphere and to be part of this wonderful team”
With the likes of Hummels, Sokratis and Subotic in the squad, it is believed that Ginter will not be in the starting 11 on a regular basis for now, but at 20, he will certainly be a player BVB like to groom for the future.
After the departure of star striker Robert Lewandowski, Dortmund signed Italian international Ciro ImmobileAi??last month. and the Bundesliga giants are also trying to get on board Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who showed his attributes in the recently concluded World Cup.
