Giorgio Chiellini believes the punishment meted out to Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, for biting the Italian, is excessive
The 27 year old was accused of bitingAi??Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguayai??i??s World Cup win over Italy. FIFA gave out its verdict following the incident yesterday and the striker received a harsh punishment from the committee. He is suspended from 9 international matches and has also got received a four month suspension from all football related activity.
But the victim of the incident, Italian defender Chiellini, said that he was not pleased with FIFA’s verdict. He said he felt no joy or a sense of revenge and hoped Suarez could at least be in proximity of his teammates during the period.
“Now inside me there’s no feelings of joy, revenge or anger against Suarez for an incident that happened on the pitch and that’s done,” said Chiellini
“There only remain the anger and the disappointment about the match. At the moment my only thought is for Luis and his family, because they will face a very difficult period.
“I have always considered unequivocal the disciplinary interventions by the competent bodies, but at the same time I believe that the proposed formula is excessive.
“I sincerely hope that he will be allowed, at least, to stay close to his team mates during the games because such a ban is really alienating for a player.”
Diego Maradona, reputed to be quite a bad boy of football in his own time (also served a 15 month football ban for testing positive to a prohibited substance), also echoed the same statement. He was quite militant in his comments and even said that Suarez didn’t kill anyone.
“The FIFA sanction is shameful, they have no sensitivity towards the fans, they might as well handcuff him and throw him in Guantanamo.Ai??The sanction on Luis is a way of punishing Uruguayan clubs for asking CONMEBOL (the South American confederation) for a fairer share of money. It hurts that they have cut short the career of a lad who is a winner. It’s an excessive suspension, FIFA cannot talk about morals to anyone.Ai??Suarez didn’t kill anyone. This is an unjust punishment.”
Brazilian striker Fred also felt the same way and said that even though he made a mistake, the ban is too severe and he would have personally wanted Suarez to play in the competition
“You can’t deny that he made a mistake, but myself as a player, as a human being, I understand that inside, players get goosebumps. There’s tension, a fight for space,” he said.
“I think that his punishment is a bit too severe, from my point of view. I debated this with a few people, and most people think that it was fair.
“In my point of view it can end an athlete’s career, four months, nine games and everyone all over it, and criticising the mistake he made.Ai??I do think he needs to be punished, but I would really like to see Suarez playing at this World Cup here in Brazil.”
Suarez has flown from Brazil and gone home to his native country Uruguay.
