Liverpool FC Striker Luis Suarez puts England on the brink of World Cup exit as his brace wins the all-important Group D clash for Uruguay.
Both the teams came into this game with a desperate need for a win having lost their respective opening matches of the World Cup. England have historically done well against South American teams in the group stage of this tournamentAi?? having lost only one of the nine matches before this game. Interestingly, the last South American team to win against the Three Lions in the group stage went on to lift the World Cup, and the Uruguayans will consider this as a good omen after the result last night.
Wayne Rooney missed Englandai??i??s best chance in the first half when he somehow managed to hit the post with his header from a Steven Gerrard free-kick. That miss proved costly as Uruguay took the lead through a wonderful counter attack. Edinson Cavani picked out Luis Suarez with a lovely chip and the Liverpool forward drifted away to the far post and headed home.
England came back into the game in the second half and looked more positive in attack. The Three Lions found the equalizer through Wayne Rooney in the 75th minute. Glenn Johnsonai??i??s low cross from the right was turned in by the Manchester United striker, for what was his first World Cup goal in his career.
But Englandai??i??s lead didnai??i??t last long as Luis Suarez once again provided Uruguay with the lead. A long kick down the field from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was expected to be dealt with ease by the England defence, but Steven Gerrard flicked on the header into the path of Suarez, and his Liverpool teammate made no mistake in finishing it past Joe Hart. It was a poor mistake, which proved to be the turning point in the match at the end and has now put England on the brink of World Cup exit.
England manager Roy Hodgson was left ai???devastatedai??i?? by this loss and felt that his team should have gone on to win the game after finding the equalizer.
“We are more than disappointed, we’re devastated,
“We believed we could do enough to get a result in this game. Having worked so hard to get back to 1-1 I believed we would go on to win the game or at least draw, so to concede the second goal is an unbelievable blow. I don’t really know what to say at this time.
“It was a goal we don’t expect to concede. Long goal kicks with the type of players we have in the team, we deal with them.
“I thought we would go on possibly to win the game and certainly I didn’t think we would lose the game at that point.
“We had been in control for such a long time. After the first five minutes (of the second half) we got back on track. We’ve been near their goal so many times, but it doesn’t matter how many times you get near the other team’s goal, it matters how many times you put it in the back of the net and we haven’t done that enough.” ai??i?? The former Liverpool manager also praised Luis Suarez for his goal, he said: “He scored the two goals. The first goal in particular was exceptionally good, Cavani’s chip and his pulling away to the back post and the cleverness of his header I thought was really top, top play.
