Tottenham Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who will become a free agent in summer has decided to sign a one year deal with Championship side Watford.
Tottenham Hotspur goal keeper Heurlho Gomes has signed a one-year deal with Championship outfit Watford. The Brazilian custodian was set to depart White Hart Lane after spending 6 years at the club. The ambitious Championship side are pursuing promotion and the addition of an experienced campaigner on a free transfer will boost their hopes ahead of next season.
Tottenham Hotspur had announced the departure of Brazilian goal keeper Heurelho Gomes on his contract expiry last week. Last season Gomes was the third choice keeper behind Hugo Lloris and Brad Friedel and had decided to leave on a free transfer this summer.
Heurelho Gomes came to England with huge fan following in 2008. He was a pivotal figure during their Champions League campaign and also played a key role in their top-4 finish the season before. The lack of playing time at White Hart Lane had forced him into a brief loan spell at 1899 TSG Hoffenheim in 2012-13 season. An injury ended hopes of recapturing his form as he remained at Tottenham for the remaining period of his contract.
The former Brazilian number 1 had played 135 games for Tottenham during his British tenure, and this vast experience is expected to come in handy in his future endevours. As soon as Tottenham Hotspur announced the farewell of the Brazilian, Championship side Watford moved quickly to bag Heurelho Gomes‘s signature. Watford’s Premier League ambitions has convinced Heurelho Gomes to commit his future to the Championship.
The deal agreed for one season with an option to extend it for another.
“There was some options but I came to meet the directors and the owners of the club and it is a club that can reach the high level. That is there ambition (to reach English Premier League) when I spoke to them they said about their ambition. “Two years ago the club nearly reached the Premier League and we will try this year again and they said they want to make a strong team and that’s why (Heurelho Gomes joined).
