Manchester United stumbled to their 11th league defeat of the season after another shambolic performance against Everton.
David Moyes has continued his streak of breaking all the wrong records during his stint at Manchester United. This is the first time Everton have completed a double over United since the 1969-70 season and also the first time when both the Merseyside clubs have done a double of the Red Devils in the same season. This loss has also mathematically ended Manchester Unitedai??i??s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League as Everton maintained their pressure on Arsenal for the race for the fourth spot in the league table.
Everton made a bright start to the match and took the lead in the 28th minute. Romelu Lukakuai??i??s long distance effort was blocked by Phil Jones, using his hands, in the penalty box and Leighton Baines stepped up to convert the resultant spot-kick. It didnai??i??t take long for the home side to double their lead after Seamus Coleman, who produced a man of the match performance down the right flank, set through Kevin Mirallas on goal and the Belgium international scored past David De Gea from a narrow angle.
A fight back was expected from Manchester United in the second half, but nothing arrived and in fact it was Everton who looked the more likely to extend their lead. The Merseyside club showed more hunger and desire while defending and pressed United all over the pitch. The away side couldnai??i??t find a way past the Everton defence as Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney produced performances to forget on the pitch.
Despite such shambolic performance from the reigning Premier League Champions, David Moyes insisted that his side controlled the game and passed the ball well and faced defeat only due to conceding two ai???stupidai??? goals.
“We gave away two terrible goals.
“Prior to that we passed the ball really well, kept the ball, had great control of the game. What we couldn’t do was make enough chances.
“We had a great control and we got done by two stupid decisions – a stupid decision to dive in front of the ball for one of them – two poor goals to give away.
“I thought we played very well in the first half. We came in 2-0 down but had been passing the ball really well.
“But we didn’t have a final through-pass at times, we didn’t have a final finish when they came – there weren’t very many of them. That was the disappointing part, that we couldn’t do that bit in the final third.” ai??i?? The Manchester United manager said.
When asked about how big a blow is it for a club of Manchester Unitedai??i??s stature to miss out on the Champions League next season, he said: “It does [Hurt] because it’s part of this club to be in it.
“We’ll do everything we can to get ourselves back in it as quickly as we can.”
The former Everton boss also revealed that the club is already working in the background to bring in the right players in the summer to rebuild the squad.
“We’ve already done that and we’re doing that behind the scenes just now.
