Daniel Sturridge may have scored eighteen league goals for Liverpool this season, but England manager Roy Hodgson still believes that the striker needs to adjust his game according to the demands of the English team to play an important part for his nation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Sturridge has mainly played as the sole striker for his club with Luis Suarez being shifted to the flanks, but during Englandai??i??s game against Denmark he was made to play on the left side with Wayne Rooney being at the centre. That did not stop him from scoring though, as the young strikerai??i??s late header clinched the game in Englandai??i??s favour.
Talking about his tactics, Hodgson said ai???We wanted to get the three of them on the field, we wanted flexibility.
ai???We made it clear to all three players that we didnai??i??t want to stamp their feet in one position, so that this oneai??i??s got to play down the left channel, this oneai??i??s got to play down the right channel.
ai???There might come times in games where weai??i??re not doing very well or weai??i??ve lost the ball and we need help, and I shall be expecting anybody to be putting the effort in to help us out.
ai???Just because he (Sturridge) happens to be a goal-scorer or a forward, doesnai??i??t preclude him from coming back and doing a bit of a job and helping out. But it certainly wasnai??i??t the plan that he would support the full-back,ai??? he added.
Sturridge has been part of the deadly duo of SAS with Luis Suarez being the other half and the two have ripped defences apart this season. They have combined to score 42 league goals among themselves, with Sturridge assisting six times. The 24 year old has been in such stupendous form that he has scored 12 times in his last 13 appearances for his club and country.
But with the Wold Cup fast approaching, Hodgson has now made it clear that the players should be able to adjust to any demands and should also drop down deep to help the defence when needed.
Sturridge, who was once vocal about his reservations to play on the flanks during his Chelsea days, has left aside any such demands and has stated that he would be prepared to start at any position for his nation.
If the friendly against Denmark was anything to go by, this would make England a comprehensive force in the World Cup as the versatility and pace of Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and another Liverpool man Raheem Sterling up front is set to test the defence of many teams.
