Manchester United concede two goals away from home against Olympiakos as Moyes continues to break all the wrong records.
This was Manchester Unitedai??i??s first defeat against an opponent from Greece in their history and it has now put them on the verge of an early exit from the Champions League knock-out stages. When the draw for the round-of-16 was conducted, United received the easiest of draws among all the English clubs and they were expected to progress to the Quarter-finals. They might still do so, but there will have to be a major upgrade in the performance they put up in Greece last night.
Olympiakos made a bright start to the game as and looked the most likelier of both sides to open the scoring, which they did in the 38th minute as Alejandro Dominguez provided them with the lead. Dominguezai??i??s long range effort took a wicked deflection off Giannis Maniatis and wrong footed David De Gea. It was expected that United will respond to this goal in the second half, but they once again failed to run up.
Interestingly Manchester United managed only one shot on target in the whole game and a team that consists of likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney are certainly expected to do better. Although the away side dominated possession, it was Olympiakos who looked more threating when they had the ball and Joel Campbell, who is on loan from Arsenal, extended their lead in the 54th minute of the match with a wonderful effort. Campbell managed to curl around his left footed shot in the right hand bottom corner of De Geaai??i??s net to Michelai??i??s delight. The match ended 2-0 as United failed to make any in roads into Olympiakosai??i?? defence and it turned out to be one of their worst European performances.
David Moyes did agree that this was their worst European performance in his post-match press conference. The former Everton manager has also shouldered the blame for this defeat and refused to point out any individuals for their poor effort in this game.
“It’s the worst we’ve played in Europe, that’s for sure. A really poor performance tonight. We never got going from the start and we didn’t deserve anything because of the way we played tonight.
“We just never really got to grips with things. To a man, you could hardly pick anyone out, we just didn’t perform. We came into the game in good form, a good mind set, but we didn’t show that tonight.
“I still didn’t think we were necessarily two goals worse off in the game. We had a shot that gets deflected, but we didn’t offer enough on the night.
“I take responsibility, it’s my team and I’ll always front it up. We didn’t play well tonight and we have to play better. We can do. The one good thing is that there is the second game to go.
“The players are hurting as well. They know how they performed. But there is a team here, that won’t change, and we’ll stick together.
