Real Madrid are ready to pay the A?70m release clause in Liverpool striker Luis Suarezai??i??s contract this summer.
Report in English daily ai???Metroai??i?? have claimed today that the Reds wanted the figure to be A?100m but the Uruguayanai??i??s representatives felt that was too disproportionate and another English newspaper, Daily Mirror has claimed that a compromise was reached before new terms were agreed.
The Reds are hoping the glamour of Champions League football will be enough to persuade the Uruguayan into staying for at least one more season, should LiverpoolAi??qualify for the competition, but they are aware not even that may prevent him from leaving if a club as big as Real Madrid match the figure that could see him depart Anfield.
Suarez recently signed a reported A?200,000-a-week deal with the Premier League club, but his representatives ensured the agreement contained a clause that enables him to leave in the event Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League.
According to the Mirror, the Merseysiders wanted to set the release clause at A?100m but were told the figure was excessive.
It is understood that it was only when a conciliation was reached that the deal was ultimately signed.
Arsenal, in the summer, believed they had triggered a release clause in the Uruguayanai??i??s previous deal when they offered to buy him in the summer for A?40m plus A?1. But Liverpool stressed it was not a contractual agreement and that they were under no legal obligation to accept the bid.
It now transpires that the Anfield board will have to enter dialogue to sell Suarez, who has scored 20 goals in all competitions this season, if the new clause is activated.
That will offer some optimism to Real Madrid that they can pay less than the A?86m they paid to Tottenham for Gareth Bale. Their chances of signing Suarez would be significantly increased if Liverpool fail to qualify for next seasonai??i??s Champions League.
Zidane takes dig at Mourinho
Zidane had a turbulent relationship with Mourinho during his time as Madrid’s sporting director and he has now claimed that he would never be able to work under The Special One.
“With [Carlo] Ancelotti, itai??i??s all happened quite naturally. I spoke with him by phone a few days before he joined and we sorted everything out. That was a good moment for me, for him and for the club,” Zidane told Spanish channel Canal+.
“I wouldnai??i??t have been able to take on that role with a coach I didnai??i??t know. I could never have been Mourinhoai??i??s assistant for example. And besides, he already had an assistant. It wouldnai??i??t have been right to take on the job of being his right-hand man.”
Mourinho was removed by Madrid in the summer of 2013 after an unsuccessful 2012-13 season in which he fell out with some important squad members like Iker Casillas, Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos.
