Manchester United manager David Moyes talks about his side’s chances of winning the league and the trip ahead to Sunderland this weekend.
The Manchester United boss spoke to reporters before their trip to the Stadium of Light to face a Sunderland side who have a new manager in Kevin Ball. Moyes was confident about being the right man for the job and promised that United will hang in there for the title race.
On him being the right man for the job, Moyes backed Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s recent comments that he was indeed the right man to step in by saying:
“Manchester United is a good club,” he said.
“I am sure they know they picked the right man for the job.
“Sir Alex was part of that process as well.”
On whether Sir Alexai??i??s book launch and sell-out theatre tour will be a distraction ahead of the Champions League clash against Real Sociedad, Moyes said:
“Anything Sir Alex does is good for Manchester United,” said Moyes on Friday. “He was an incredible manager. His success was fantastic.
“I don’t see it being negative in any way at all.”
On Ferguson reiterating that Rooney had indeed asked for a transfer at the end of last season, Moyes told the reporters:
“If you are alluding to Wayne I see no problems with that whatsoever,” said Moyes.
“Look at Wayne’s performances. Look at the way he has played. I think he has been fantastic.
“I don’t think anything that comes out will have any effect on us.
“To the Manchester United supporters, anything Sir Alex says is gospel. They love him and rightly so.”
Rooney should be available to face Sunderland after recovering from the shin problem that kept him out of the match against Shakhtar Donetsk. But Moyes remained coy on the possibilities of the England striker playing:
“I have not seen him yet,” said Moyes.
“I cannot give you an update.”
Moyes also backed Kevin Ball to do well after taking over the Sunderland job from the axed Paolo di Canio:
“Di Canio had just got the job and I lost that game,” said Moyes.
“It was probably one of the only games I lost at Everton in the last 11 or 12 games.
“We go up there now with a new manager again, Kevin Ball, but he has been there [for a while].
“He’s very experienced, he knows the club and he knows the players.
“He’ll have watched all the games and he’ll know what he has to do in this short-term period.
“Whether he gets the job or not, nobody knows but Sunderland look as if they played quite well in the last couple of games.”
