After bedazzling Germany for two straight seasons, last season Borussia Dortmund set Europe on fire as well. Kloppai??i??s men made amends with their previous yearai??i??s horror show of finishing at the bottom of their group. Coming inches close from winning their second Champions League trophy, they lost the final to their domestic rivals Bayern Munich by a margin of 2 goals to 1.
Dortmundai??i??s shimmying performances throughout the European campaign, which included exploits like topping the ‘Group of Death’ that had champions of Spain, England and The Netherlands in it, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat against Malaga by scoring two injury-time goals to secure semi-final berth and remaining unbeaten till the second leg of the semi-final against Real Madrid, had captured the emotions of many hearts and earned a host of expected attentions.
Sadly, all was not well in the team. The ai???Adios, Amigosai??? started two seasons back with Sahin, followed by Kagawa in the next season. This time the call came from their domestic rivals and the call was meant for GAi??tze, Dortmundai??i??s golden boy. Such transfers always hurt hard. The fact that the announcement was made just a day before Dortmundai??i??s all-important semifinal clash against Real Madrid made it an even harder pill to swallow.
All is still not well in the team. There has been enough mudslinging in the media with want-away striker Lewandowski accusing Dortmund officials to have gone back on their words of letting him leave while Watzke and Co. maintaining stance of not having made any such promises. Contractually this happens to be Lewandowskiai??i??s last season at Dortmund. Neither does he want to extend his contract nor to travel abroad and play for any other team in the continent. He only wants Bayern, who have allegedly held meetings his agents. As of now, he is the next in line to wish ai???Adios, Amigosai??? to the Dortmund faithful, likely to jump ship to their strongest domestic rival for free in July, 2014.
Die Fremde
Felipe Santana, who was hardly satisfied with playing second fiddle to Dortmundai??i??s first choice CBs Hummels and Subotic, has secured a transfer to local rivals Schalke. Moritz Leitner, who was a surprise omission from Germanyai??i??s U-21 team that was sent to the Euro Championship, has been sent on a two-year loan spell with Stuttgart to get more playing time at the top flight.
In order to restore his career, promising talent Leonardo Bittencourt has secured a move to Mirko Slomkaai??i??s Hannover, with Dortmund having a buy-back option in his contract. Bittencourt, who impressed in Bundesliga II with his exploits in Energie Cottbusai??i?? colors, did not get as many exposures as he expected at the top flight.
Promising youth academy product Lasse Sobiech has left for Hamburg in search of first-team action. The defender had earlier entertained loan spells with St.Pauli and Greuther Furth. Forward Daniel Ginzek, who has spent three seasons with Dortmund reserves and had a successful last season on loan with St.Pauli where he netted 18 times in 31 games, has left for Nuremberg. In order to get top-level playing time, full-back Julian Koch has moved to Mainz on a permanent basis with Dortmund having a buy-back option.
Turkey U-20 talent Kerem Demirbay, who had already signed a contract in January with Hamburg, has left the club this summer. A key player for Dortmundai??i??s reserves has rejected Dortmundai??i??s offer to promote him to the first team. According to Dortmund reserve boss David Wagner,
I would have loved to keep him. I also know that Michael Zorc made him a good offer and Jurgen Klopp told him of his prospects at the club in a long talk.
Reserves player Bakalorz could be on the move as well.
New Blood
Following the big money transfer of GAi??tze, Dortmund needed to address to some of their shortcomings of last season. One of that is by adding depth into the squad. Initially around seven players were released and wage budget was increased from ai??i??48m to ai??i??68m. Klopp recently went public about his two fantasy signings ai??i?? Isco and Alcantara; wild goose chase that is. There was an initial interest to acquire the services of Tello as well. Barcelona, in order to help Deulofeu earn top-level match practice, wanted to loan him out to Dortmund. However, Dortmund was looking for a permanent deal and Deulofeuai??i??s buyout clause immediately put them off. Finally, after testing the fansai??i?? patience with the rigmarole of to buy or not to buy, Dortmund have landed three strong contenders who could very well hold them together against yet another Bayern onslaught in the upcoming season.
Greek International Sokratis Papastathopoulos was signed last season, even before the Champions League final was played. The no-nonsense defender who is considered as one of the fastest centre halves in Bundesliga could take up the role of Santana. The ex-Milan defender enjoyed a starting role with Werder Bremen. He left Milan as he was not getting enough playing time.
That could be the only concern as Sokratis is mainly a cover for Hummels and Subotic. And he wants to play more. He is likely to get enough opportunity to impress Klopp till November at least, as he may have to fill in Piszczekai??i??s boots. The towering defender has experience in playing a fullbackai??i??s role with Bremen and he is eager to earn a berth:
I can play in both positions. WhatA?s important is where the coach needs me. In any case, I will give my best.
Dortmundai??i??s second signing is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Last season only Ibrahimovic has scored more goals than him in the Ligue 1. One of the fastest players around, the Gabonese attacker has clocked 30 metres at 3.8 seconds, as good as Usain Boltai??i??s speed during the first 30 metres.
Aubameyang has shown significant improvement since joining the team and has already broken the duck in the friendlies. Flexible in both wide and central role, Aubameyangai??i??s speed could be utilized wisely to create pockets of space in opposition defense and stretch it. In his own words,
At St Etienne I learned to play in all positions. My coach told me, A?You are going to need it if you want to play at a big club.ai??i??
Suits Klopp well!
Dortmundai??i??s third signing after a rigorous transfer activity was that of Ukraine Leagueai??i??s top scorer, Henrich Mkhitaryan. Liverpool were also interested in signing the Armenian International. However, Mkhitaryan chose to work with Klopp and his men. Understandable as he will be getting exposure to Champions League.
For a midfielder to score 25 goals in a season is in itself a big deal. Heai??i??d be replacing GAi??tze in the central attacking midfield. His playing style is quite different from GAi??tze and more similar to Kagawa. Add to that, he has a nose for scoring goals and be a vital cog in a fast paced counter attacking model of football. So when Klopp said, ai???Mkhitaryan fits like an ass in a bucketai??? he had ai???Mikiai??i??ai??i??s attributes in his minds aligned against his tactical blue print.
View from the grapevineAi??
Dortmund seem interested in adding depth into their team lack of which proved pivotal towards the end of last season. Ever since Watzke made it public that they might just add one more attacking player into their payroll, rumor mill started running in full throttle. Out of all the rumors that have been making headlines, two rumors have been the strongest.
Ryu Seung-Woo, the South Korean attacking all-rounder, scored twice in the recently concluded FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. He has already attracted attention from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. Dortmund made the first move and seemed to be on pole position to snap up this upcoming talent from Asia, Bundesligaai??i??s third Korean. However, it has been reported that the three-year deal has fallen through. Failing to agree on compensation seems to be the reason behind collapse of the deal. Otherwise, the deal could have been a real steal for a fast-paced winger/attacking midfielder.
Jesus Manuel Corona, Mexico U-20ai??i??s ace winger, also known as El Tecatito, is another sought after youngster. Juventus, Porto and Barcelona B were all rumored to be interested in acquiring his services. Tricky and fast ai??i?? attributes that make him a perfect fit in Kloppai??i??s team. Dortmund are yet to make any offer and the rumor too has cooled off since Seung-Woo saga had begun.
Since the deal with the Korean attacker has not gone through, it is unlikely that Dortmund will be making any more recruits. Yes, Klopp has gone public by heaping praises on Jackson Martinez and sees him as a replacement for Lewandowski. However, a deal in this summer is highly unlikely.
Pre-season Diaries
Dortmund 1 – 0 Hamburg
MAi??nchengladbach 1 – 0 Dortmund
Bursaspor 1 – 4 Dortmund
Basel 1 – 3 Dortmund
FC Magdeburg 0 – 3 DortmundAi??
Klopp utilized the pre-season to try out some of the lads from the youth team as well as from the reserves. The friendlies were also used to help the team get accustomed with 4-3-3 variation, a formation which Klopp may employ as he has ammunition that could fit the bill, as well as the inherent rituals of hard pressing and fast counter-attacking drills.
A number of young guns were given the chance to impress the coach. Amongst the youth brigade Eric Durm, Jannik Bandowski, Marian Sarr, Jonas Hofmann and Marvin Ducksch were encouraged to showcase their mAi??tier. Durm was tried out in right-back and so was Sokratis. Bandowski was given several run-ins in the left-back role to deputize Schmelzer. Klopp has also iterated that Grosskreutz will be primarily used as a cover for Schmelzer.
Sarr was used primarily deployed in the heart of defence. Hofmann and Duksch were given attacking roles up front. Out of all these players, Durm, Sarr and Hofmann impressed the Dortmund faithful, Hofmann in particular. He scored a sublime goal in the friendly match which helped his team overcome Hamburg in the Telekom Cup to win the third place play-off. If he can improve his first touch and close control of the ball, this could very well be his breakthrough season. Duksch and Bandowski need to practice more and reach the level that is expected from them.
The tactical rejig of 4-3-3 has been doing rounds since last season. Now that they have got Lewandowski, Reus and Aubameyang up front, Dortmund had the luxury to try out the formation. Dortmund used a solo holding midfielder and two CM. One of those two CMs would play an advanced role. Then comes the wingers and forward. The attacking trio would be seen swapping positions to outfox the oppositions. In the game against Basel the team segued in 4-3-3 seamlessly, reassuring Klopp of his plans for next season.
Since the end of last season, Klopp was thinking of employing even more aggressive pressing and closing down all over the pitch to win the ball back as an effective remedy for leaky defence. The defensive concern is valid as they conceded 42 goals in 2012-13, five less than what they conceded in the previous two seasons combined.
Not sure how 4-3-3 could help bring down the number of goals conceded, but Klopp seems to be happy with the effort put by the attacking lads to contributing in defence, so much so that he even likened them to the hyenas for their ability to hunt/irritate/snatch in packs,
The boys do their [pre-season training] like hyenas! The players have incredible fitness levels – the best we’ve ever had!
Perfect Start
Dortmund have finally broken the jinxed spell of losing the Dfl-Supercup. Third time lucky, Klopp decided to face last season’s nemesis Bayern with their new signings out of the first eleven. Mkhitaryan was anyway out injured. And they faced Pep Guardiola’s experimental Bayern side that did not have a few of the star players in the lineup either. One such star player’s absence did prove vital though, as his replacement could be held responsible for the first goal and a Ai??number of harakiri moments in the first half. Yes, Neuer was missed.
Klopp went with the usual 4-2-3-1 formation against Bayern’s 4-1-4-1. Interesting for Dortmund was Grosskreutz’s appointment in the right-back role, restoration of Sahin into the side in his holding role and GA?ndoAYanAi??in Kagawa-GAi??tze role. Even though the season is two weeks away, both teams started with an invigorating fervour and never let the tempo fall. Both teams showed good pressurizing abilities, making it difficult for the opponents to keep hold onto the ball. However, Bayern started to showed great composure by managing to string in a few passes and gradually got into their usual passing rhythm.
Dortmund, unlike the Champions’ League final, kept pressurizing Bayern at every opportunity and executed the counter-attacks to near perfection. They opened the scoring through a handy assist from Starke, a gift that Reus, Dortmund and the Signal Iduna Park could not refuse. Their back-to-back counter-attack almost made Bayern’s uber-high backline led by Van Buyten and Boateng pay. Lewandowski’s goal was ruled out even though it looked tight and moments later Lewndowski had the chance to the double the lead when he failed to convert a glorious cross from Kuba or should we say Starke’s first constructive contribution!
It all started the same way in the second half with Bayern sharing a lion’s share of the possession. They even managed to score one through Robben. But immediately Dortmund retorted, with a double blow – a diving header own goal from Van Buyten and a sublime GA?ndoAYanAi??goal on the break. This was the time when Guardiola’s selection of Thiago in the lone holding midfielder’s role could be questioned. But the yellow wall concerned themselves by whetting to a double cushion in the scoreline.
It could have ended 3-1 in favor of Dortmund. But the flying Dutchman, who was jeered throughout the match for his Champions League final exploits, decided to answer the jeers with Bayern’s second of the night. But again just when it seemed that Bayern are coming right back at it, Dortmund finally put the game to bed by rounding off another top-notch counter-attacking move when Reus converted Aubameyang’s through ball. Aubameyang himself was inches close from finding a fourth goal, an effort which was saved by Starke who made enough saves to make amends for the first goal.
Yes, the result was good for Dortmund. After all the bad blood surrounding GAi??tze’s transfer and the Champions League final defeat – the football fraternity wanted to witness a Dortmund backlash of some sort. Klopp’s men did not disappoint. These are early days, the season has not yet started. There is absolutely no reason to write off Pep’s Bayern after one defeat. In Klopp’s words,
The winner is always happy and the loser does not care too much ai??i?? this is the great thing about the Supercup.
But the Dortmund fans will take heart. After winning five straight games against Bayern it was this Supercup loss last year that marked a reversal of fate and Dortmund failed to beat Bayern even once in the next four meetings since then. The jouissance of this Supercup victory may just have taken another turn of fate in this rivalry. Nevertheless, a win against Bayern in any format is huge and when it comes at the threshold of a new season, Dortmund can take it as a good omen.
