End of an era. This phrase is used so loosely in life that it has lost its meaning. But we will have to fall back to that phrase as we come to terms with the realization of Sir Alex Ferguson no longer being in charge of the Manchester United Football Team. The word Club is deliberately not used, because SAF will still be a huge influence in the Club. Make no mistake about that. Lots has been said and written about the great man. His passion for the game, successes, managing transition, man management, hair dryer treatments, everything about him is legendary. So letai??i??s shift focus on The Chosen One. David Moyes.
The fact that David Moyes is a good manager is unquestionable. What he has done at Everton will only be clear when someone else takes over. Yes, the leadership at Everton has shown tremendous stability and good footballing sense in putting all their faith in Moyes for over a decade. But building a team with almost no major signings or stars and still managing to be the best club in Merseyside and consistently fighting for European places is no small feat. Yes, he hasnai??i??t won anything at Everton. Yes, he has no European pedigree to boast off. Yes, he has had no burden of expectation, especially of the unrealistic types. But what he lacks in the experience of living the life of SAF, Mourinho, Mancini, Pep, Klopp, Wenger and the likes, he makes it up with amazing stability, consistency, understanding of the game, passion and readiness for a good old fashioned fight. And those are the qualities that make United legends like Schmeichel say ai???he is from the same cloth as SAFai???. Well, for a football fan, especially a Glory Hunter, thatai??i??s music to the ears.
So, whatai??i??s in store for David Moyes? Thatai??i??s a million dollar question. But a question for which the answer is very simple. Great Expectations. But then, that would be true for any manager who would have replaced one of the greatest managers of all time and certainly the greatest British manager. Replacing 26 plus years of consistent and unprecedented success will not be easy by any stretch of imagination. Yes, what SAF has done is build a Football Club and not a Football Team. And that is his biggest legacy. So Moyes will have all the right ingredients in place. A stable football club, great commercial success, a near full trophy room, an excellent youth system, good backbone and structure in the first team, legends as directors, worldwide fan following ai??i?? the list of positives go on.
The fact that United have offered a six year contract proves the amount of faith they have in Moyes and in stability. So for Moyes, it is a dream come true. But, yes there is a ai???butai???. There always is. And that ai???butai??? is Moyesai??i?? lack of pedigree. The lack of trophies will weigh him down heavily. That will ensure that he will be more closely followed than anyone else in the football world in the next season. Would that have happened with Mourinho or Pep or even Klopp for that matter? You bet it would!!! But here is the difference.
Let us assume one of the 3 mentioned would have taken over from SAF. If by end of November, God forbid, United find themselves anywhere outside of the top 4, then the fans would be more understanding of the situation. They would lay the blame more on the playersai??i?? will and lack of focus and less on the manager. Thatai??i??s because the manager would have been a proven success and would gain more sympathy in his journey to fill the largest boots in world football. But Moyes wonai??i??t be handed that luxury. He wonai??i??t be treated so gently by the fans. He might still have the support of the top bosses at United. But the pressure from fans and media would be unbearable. His every step, his every decision, his signing ai??i?? everything he does will be reviewed, critiqued and hung dry in public domain. And that is where the true test of Moyesai??i?? character would lie.
So is it a given that United will face challenges. Make no mistake they will. The transition will be tough. In spite of a good structure being in place and 2-3 good signings bound to come in, the fact that the old man wonai??i??t be in the dugout chewing gum will have a massive impact on the player psyche. Imagine for a player like Zaha. He was the last signing on SAF. He would be devastated to know that he will never play for that man. So will the old guard. The first few games will undoubtedly be tough. And given how brutal the league is, a bad start more often than not means a bad finish. And that will make Moyesai??i?? life very difficult.
Is there a silver lining? Yes. The fans. Not the ones like the author or the paying public at OT. The fans in the directorsai??i?? box. One thing that differentiates United from most clubs is that the players and administrators are fans first and football professionals later. The Nevilles, Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Charlton and the biggest of them all SAF. It would be naA?ve to think that SAF will watch Unitedai??i??s transition from the sidelines. He will be the biggest supporter and fiercest critique of Moyes. And this is where Moyesai??i?? opportunity lies. And this is where he will be better suited to make the transition a success as compared to Mourinho, Klopp or Pep. Moyes wonai??i??t come with a baggage. He wonai??i??t come with top notch ego.
Yes, he is a fiercely independent man. But he will be more than willing to listen to SAF. He could ensure that he uses SAF and his legacy to his advantage. The fact that he is SAFai??i??s choice and one that was made in 1998 proves the trust SAF has in Moyes and his abilities. So Moyes should not have any trouble in converting the ai???interferenceai??? to support and guidance. That will help him cement his place among the fans and most importantly in the locker room. After all he is ai???cut from the same clothai???. So there is no doubt that Moyes will have the passion, intelligence and fight in him to channelize SAFai??i??s presence into creating his own legacy at United.
United fans are in absolute shock. Though there was inevitability to this ai??i?? given that the great man has needed a pacemaker since 2004 ai??i?? but any awestruck fan would have thought this day would never come. But now that it has, and now that SAF and United have made a choice on the successor, it may not take much convincing that the right man has been chosen. And what is more heartening is that the club philosophy of stability was the force behind the decision. So it is truly an end of an era. While that era will always be fondly remembered, United fans canai??i??t wait for the new era to begin.
