Bayern Munich club president Uli Hoeness has revealed that the club had made several attempts at signing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
As Arsenal prepares to take on German League leaders Bayern Munich in the 2nd leg of their Champions League clash on Wednesday, Arsene Wenger would hope that his team can restore some of pride they lost in the heavy defeat they suffered at home at the hands of the German giants in the 1st leg. The future is still uncertain for the Frenchman, who is yet to sign a new contract, but Uli Hoenessai??i?? recent statement has once again proved how much respect he has earned in Europe over the years.
Bayern Munich might have landed Pep Guardiola as their manager, but club president Uli Hoeness revealed that the German club have made several attempts at signing Arsene Wenger and how his name was always considered in every discussion for managerial candidates over the years. He also pointed out how loyal Wenger has been towards Arsenal ai??i?? a virtue uncommon these days.
“We did try to get him at Bayern Munich a few times” Hoeness told The Sun. “Even before he went to Japan (in 1995), Franz Beckenbauer and I went to Nice and discussed with him and everything was clear, but then at the end of the day he decided to go to Japan.
“We were very surprised. From Japan he went to Arsenal and over the years, whenever we were looking for a new coach, Wenger was always one we considered.
“He’s a very serious person, very strong and has a very good idea about the game.
“There have been a few moments where we have discussed his name over the years.
“He has always remained loyal to Arsenal which is fantastic behaviour. But it is true we wanted him at Bayern a few times.” ai??i?? Hoeness said ahead of Bayernai??i??s clash against Arsenal.
PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi revealed a similar story few months back, where he stated how they wanted to sign Wenger, but the Frenchman turned his back at the offer and remained at the club. The French club has been linked once again this season, but Wenger is a man who would leave on his own terms. Wenger has always stated that he review his own work at the end of the season before deciding on his future.
Although Arsenal’s hope of a silverware has already vanished, the Gunners can yet snatch the all important Champions League qualification spot in the Premier League if the finish the season strongly. Reports suggest that Arsene Wenger is preparing to have a busy summer as he looks to resurrect the squad with quality new addition; Arsenal do have financial muscle to do so next season. This transfer window could be the most important one in Arsene Wenger’s long career as he would look to build one more title winning squad before he leaves the club.
