Rafael Benitez has been sacked as the manager of Real Madrid, after a string of poor performances saw the team slip four points away from the top of the table, to the uncharacteristic third spot.

The Rumours had already been doing the rounds about Benitez’s future at the club, with reports of discontent players coming out of the Santiago Bernabeu a bit too often than the Los Blancos would have liked. These rumours gained in momentum, after Real Madrid failed to beat a struggling Valencia CF side led by former Manchester United captain Gary Neville.

On Monday evening, the bosses at the club called a meeting with Benitez at the Bernabeu to discuss his future at the club. It was reportedly decided in the meeting that the club and the manager would go their own ways from now on.

Zizou to take over

. Zinedine Zidane takes over Real Madrid from sacked BenitezReal Madrid also announced on Monday that club legend Zinedine Zidane would be taking over the reins from Benitez.

Zidane has been the manager at the Real Madrid B team for quite some time now, and the bosses at the club believe that he is finally ready to become a manager for the Los Blancos.

The French star however, has not had a taste of top level football management, and there are a lot of doubts as to how he would handle the pressure of being in the hotseat at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“I am going to put my heart and soul into this job so that everything works out well,” Zidane was quoted saying by the BBC, after the announcement.
